The Marine Corps has been present in Fort Lee, New Jersey since the early 1800s. The first Marines were stationed here in 1809 and their presence was continued through World War I. In 1942, the Marine Barracks and Camp on Governors Island were closed and demolished to make way for Fort Lee’s new military installation. Fort Lee saw its first deployment to Iraq in 2003 as part of the U.S. invasion force. Since then, it has seen a number of deployments to other parts of the world including Afghanistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Somalia and Yemen. It is also home to Naval Air Station Elizabeth City which provides air support for Operation Neptune’s Spear which targeted al-Qaeda targets in Afghanistan in 2009. The Marines currently occupy over 170 buildings within Fort Lee including barracks, an armory, a mess hall and two clinics. In addition there are several dozen naval vessels moored at nearby Elizabeth City docks which provide access for marine detachments conducting local operations or visiting the area for training purposes or humanitarian assistance missions such as search and rescue operations or water support during natural disasters such as hurricanes or tsunami events.
