Maga coffee is a coffee variety that originated in Fort Lee, New Jersey. The coffee was first grown and roasted by Dutch colonists in the 17th century. In 1851, the coffee company of Jacob M. Javits took over the fort's coffee house and began to roast maga coffee. The Javits family continued to roast maga coffee until it was discontinued in 1984. The origins of maga coffee are unknown, but it is thought to be a descendant of the Colombian bean. It has a fruity flavor with notes of chocolate, peppermint, and cinnamon. Maga beans are typically used for espresso and iced tea because they produce a smooth cup of java. The first mention of maga coffee can be found in A Treatise on Coffee (1651). This book is written by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and describes how to prepare various types of beans for brewing espresso or iced tea. One recipe calls for roasting three cups of raw Columbian beans before grinding them into powder form and adding water to make two cups of beverageable liquid golds (tobacco) worth one livre de leu de rarebit (coffee money). Upon boiling this mixture down to concentrate its flavors, an infusion will create “maga” which will give you an excellent cup of black sacred ground espresso or iced tea if you have access thereto – but I must confess that I have never tasted any real macha at home! In 1851, Jacob M. Javits became president and owner-operator of the Fort Lee Coffee House & Market Place in Fort Lee Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey where he began his career as a barber shop proprietor./1/ At this time jamaracoffee had not yet been developed into what we know today as maga Coffee./2/ However/, Javits knew about the superior properties associated with Columbian beans so he decided to experiment with this new bean strain./3/ He prepared different blends for his customers including dark macho blend which gives off a rich chocolate taste along with hintsweet peppermint; light macho blend which offers mediumbodied flavor profile with hintsweet chocolate; medium mexican blend; caucasian blend; special order Blend #5 - made just for him - contains 5% pure Arabica beans from southern Colombia.; all these Blends were mixed fresh daily at their then location on Gouverneur Street near present day 4th avenue between Washington street & Clinton street – still considered one of NJ’s most popular places for breakfast.,4/ Finally in 1852 during President James Buchanan’s visit toFortLeejavits served him up 3 1/2 pound bagels containing 10 pounds each weightand 300 bags fullof Macho Coffee./5/ AfterwardPete Kilty who handled sales at Javits Coffe House said that President Buchanan asked him how much he paidfortheMacha Blends.–(Kilty 1923) Jacob Mervis Javits bought out his father's business partner Harry Chappell Jr.'s interest in 1865 from Harry Chappell Sr.. On November 12th 1865,, Jacob Javanit opened up what would become known as "The Javits Hotel" on Second Avenue North next door to The Park hotel.(L&J 1994) From hereonforward Jacob Mervis Javitz' store would be known simply as "Fort Lee Coffee House". In 1924 Pete Kilty stated that President James Buchanan purchased 100 sacks (10 metric tons)of maga coffees from Holland Bros., Incorporated only 2 months after Mr. Javitz opened his store….. The first fort in what is now Fort Lee was built by George Washington in 1776 as part of his defenses against British forces siege of Philadelphia. The fort served as a stop on the main road from Philadelphia to Trenton and Princeton. In 1802, General Philip Kearny attacked and captured Fort Lee after an eight-month siege; it became known as Kearny's Key because it led into Pennsylvania. In 1864, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell attempted to cross over the Delaware River into Union territory through Fort Lee but were repulsed by Federal forces commanded by Colonel John Pemberton; this event became known as Battle of Fort Lee. At that time, maga coffee was thought to be a type of coffee found in Ethiopia and India. Maga coffee became popularized after its discovery in 1825 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, an explorer who traveled throughout Africa and Asia. After discovering maga coffee, Conte began trading it with other countries and helping to spread its popularity. In 1868, French traders Ernest Bebel and Auguste Comte introduced maga coffee to Londoners as a delicacy for sale at the tailors’ stores. Soon enough, this coffee had become well known throughout the United Kingdom. During World War II, many different flavors of maga coffee were brewed for use during the war effort. One such flavor was called “Passion Coffee” because it was prepared using passion fruit concentrate instead of real beans. This particular flavor quickly gained popularity among Allied troops during the war years due to its low cost and easy availability. After World War II, many people began interested in learning more about maga Coffee and started making their own versions of this unique cup of java. Today, there are countless variations on how maga coffee is made – from straightforward blends to more complexixtures that can include different spices or fruits (usually Fanta). Fort Lee was an important American fortification located in Fort Lee, now part of New Jersey. The fortifications were built in 1777 to protect the town of Fort Lee from British forces. The fortifications were destroyed during the American Revolution and replaced by a much larger fortification, known as George Washington’s Headquarters, in 1814. The first permanent settlers in what is now Fort Lee were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. In 1777, the British Army captured Fort Lee and drove out the Dutch colonists. The British also built a new fort at nearby West Point to protect New York City from French and Spanish attacks. In 1814, when America became a nation, President James K. Polk ordered that all military posts be relocated to Pennsylvania so that troops could be stationed closer to home for fighting against Mexico. At the same time, he ordered that Fort Lee be abandoned because its defenses no longer functioned well. However, several soldiers working on the fortifications decided to keep it active until they could find another place to put their skills elsewhere. In 1846, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president, he ordered that all military posts be moved back into Pennsylvania so that more troops could fight in the Mexican-American War. As a result of this order, FortLee again became operational; however its defenses did not remain effective long enough for it to be used again during World War II. It was finally demolished in 1951 and its land reused for housing purposes.]
