Fort Lee was founded in 1764 as a military post on the banks of the Monmouth River. The town was renamed New Brunswick in 1814 and became Fort Lee in 1825. It was abandoned by the United States in 1898 and returned to New Jersey government control. In 1945, Fort Lee became an incorporated city with a population of over 80,000. The city has since grown into one of the most important commercial and cultural centers in New Jersey. In its early years, Fort Lee was known for its coffee beans. Coffee beans were brought overland from Java by traders and settlers in the 16th century. By the time Fort Lee was founded, coffee had already become an important commodity in Europe and North America. Coffee beans were shipped downriver to Philadelphia, where they were roasted and sold as goods such as coffee cake or corduroys. In 1825, General James Wilkinson built a fort at what is now Point Pleasant Park to protect trade routes between Delaware Bay and points inland. The fort served as a trading post until it was destroyed by fire in 1830. The next year, Wilkinson built a new fort at what is now School Avenue and Lewes Road – also called Fort Washington – to improve security along these trade routes. The first coffee crop from this new site came up during 1835-36; but due to lack of storage space, only two metric tons were produced that year compared to 5 metric tons produced the previous year for all of New Jersey combined (including Newark). This season's crops may have been affected too by bad weather conditions that interfered with harvests elsewhere acrossNJ; however, future roasts from this site would be highly prized because of their quality."

This led to their establishment of Java Coffee Plantation near present-day Jakarta, where they produced high-quality beans until 1823 when they left because of an economic crisis. During World War II, Japanese troops captured Batavia and destroyed most of the Dutch coffee industry including warehouses and fields using incendiary bombs. However, some Dutch soldiers managed to escape with valuable beans for their own use even though it was forbidden by Japan. Consequently, much of Indonesia’s traditional bean culture still survives today; there are many small villages where people grow their own coffees under ancestral terms or purchase beans from larger plantations nearby.
