The New Jersey Army National Guard's history in Fort Lee dates back to the Revolutionary War. For more than two centuries, the men and women of the NJAG have participated in our state's defense. Today, we are one of the most diverse and well-equipped military units in the country. Our unit is composed of Regular, Reserve, and National Guard soldiers from all over New Jersey. We are a family-owned business with a history that goes back to 1824. Our mission is to protect our citizens and property, both here at home and abroad. In 1862, General George McClellan ordered us into battle against Confederate forces at Antietam Heights. The NJAG was among the first units to arrive on site and fight alongside our fellow state troopers. After days of fighting, we emerged victorious. In 1971, we were reactivated as part of Operation Neptune's Spear – an effort to suppress large scale communist protests throughout New Jersey during the height of the Vietnam War Era. This time around, we again put our skills towards helping law enforcement make arrests or saving lives when needed most! Since 9/11/2001 – when I came aboard as Commanding Officer (CO) – Fort Lee has been through some tough times! It has seen significant deployments within NATO & partner nations such as Afghanistan; Hurricane Katrina; Sandy; Irene; Maria; Asymmetric Warfare Strike Redeployment II - also known asOperation Just Cause III- & many more events which have prepared us for whatever may come next should another terrorist attack occur in America(s). While these deployments cannot be counted against us because they happen outside our normal rotational schedule like hurricanes or other natural disasters…they do increase your sense that you are a part of something larger no matter what might happen on any given day!
