Florham Park, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,801 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Middlesex County and home to the University of Pennsylvania's main campus. The first Europeans to see Florham Park were Spanish traders on their way from Havana to Philadelphia in 1524. In 1692, Colonel John Smith of Paterson founded what would become Florham Park as an agricultural community known for its production of hay and oats. In 1715, George Washington visited Florham Park while campaigning for president. He stayed at the home of Drury Lane Tavern owner John Morin where he met his future wife Martha Custis]. On October 3, 1715, Washington and his wife traveled from Mount Vernon back east along Route 22 to Mount Holly where they spent five nights before continuing on to Morin's house for dinner on October 5th. The town was incorporated as a borough by Act of Parliament on April 14th, 1814; it became a city by Act of City Council on December 12th, 1851. In 1916-1917 during World War I Florham Park served as an airbases and storage area for planes being manufactured in nearby Newark Liberty Airport. During World War II Florham Park was also home to many American soldiers who were assigned there as part of Operation Overlord including General Dwight D Eisenhower and Admiral Chester Nimitz among others; however most troops left after Victory in Europe Day 1945 when the war ended. The first permanent European settlers in the area were Dutch people who came to Florham Park from New Amsterdam in 1664. The first school was opened in 1724. In 1800, a post office called Florham Park was established and remained in operation until 1894. In 1814, a group of French Canadians arrived at Florham Park and started a farmstead that became known as "L'Ange". They also built a gristmill on the creek which still operates today. In 1838, a group of English colonists arrived at Florham Park and founded the town of Paramus. The first store was opened in 1840. In 1845, the township had 6 households and 20 acres of land.
