Fairview is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-based metropolitan area. The name comes from Fairfield Manor and Fairview Parish in Bedfordshire, England. In 1794, Nicholas French built Fairfield Plantation on what is now the eastern border of Fairview Township and it became part of Camden County after that date. In 1834, John Troup bought land west of the Passaic River from French and developed it into what is today'sFairview Township. The first white settlers arrived in 1837 and until 1892 there were no black residents in the township or in adjacent Camden County. In 1898, portions of east Camden Township were annexed to Fairview as well; this gave FairVIEW its present boundaries which include most of central Camden County as well as parts of east Jersey City and west Newark (now called Paterson). By 1920, all but 2 percent of the township had been annexed to Fairview by then-Mayor James Fenton who intended to create an integrated municipality with a single governing body for all residents regardless race or ethnicity. However this idea met with opposition from somefairviewians who wanted their own government separate from that of fellow whites within city limits. Ultimately following a referendum held on November 3rd1920Fenton withdrew his proposal to annex any more territory to fairVIEW despite objections from many residents living within city limits who felt they would have lost valuable municipal services should their neighborhoods be annexed too - an event which has been known as "The Refusal [of Annexation]". In 1929 Borough President Harry Cappell organized a group called "The Civic League" to promote racial integration within Camden County through education, legislation and other means however little progress was made until 1955 when Jackie Robinson became one of the first black athletes ever to play professional baseball for a major league team when he played for The Brooklyn Dodgers against The Cincinnati Reds at Shea Stadium; this event helped leadto increased public awareness and support for integrating local schools across America which led finallyto annexation in 1960 by Mayor William Hennigan spearheaded by then-Borough President James J. Lynch; incorporation ceremonies took place on December 5th1960 with incorporation papers being issued two days later amidst much fanfare including performances by both Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali Accordingly Jackie Robinsonanchesdrove homethe flagpolefrom his old ballpark located just outside town center before entering through an open door - markingthe endofracial segregationwithinCAMDEN COUNTY! Fairview is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. The name Fairview is derived from the Dutch word "geweer" meaning "a weapon." The first settlers of what is now Fairview were farmers who began to arrive in 1764. By 1779, they had erected a log cabin and started to grow maize and other vegetables. In 1802, they became the owners of what is today their primary farmstead and continued to farm until 1857 when the land was bought by George Washington Haynes for $5,000. The haynes family ran the farm until it was sold in 1905 to Julius Rosenwald who donated it to Fairview Township as part of his gift to society. In 1912-1913, Fairview participated in an agricultural fair that took place in Atlantic City which resulted in its first exhibition of artesian water wells. Admission was free for all residents of township and there was also a lecture on agriculture given by Drury Fenton at the local high school. From 1913-1915, Fairview held an annual Fourth of July picnic that attracted many visitors from throughout Essex County as well as nearby townships including Newark Liberty and Paterson NJ In 1945, when FairVIEW became one of 20 townships within Morris County under control of newly created Camden County due to statehood proceedings;FairVIEW's first mayor was Harry Averill (1920 thru 1925). Mayor Averill raised money for purchase of new civic center which would seat up to 1,500 people with exhibits and classes upstairs on three floors with a basement for storage or performances downstairs . DuringMayor Averill's tenure some $once million dollars worth of public works were done including paving streets and sidewalks; building two churches (Anglican & Methodist), five schools (grades 3-12), parkland/residence halls for both management & use by residents; installation Of streetlights; construction Of two fire engines; repair/replacement Of more than 100 county roads
Fairview was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,744 at the 2010 census. It is located within the Glassboro Township and Uniontown Boroughs of Mercer County. The first settler in Fairview was John Hargrave who arrived in 1764. He built a cabin on the now-demolished farmstead known as Hargrave's Ford on what is now State Route 9A north of present-day Glassboro Township. The first white child born in Fairview was John Atherton Jr., who was born on December 12, 1807, to John Atherton Sr. and his wife Elizabeth (née Pemberton). ) In 1814, when land east of present-day Glassboro Township was patented to Christopher Beekman (a brother of Sir George Beekman), he sold two lots in Fairview for $100 each to Abraham De Witt. De Witt built a cabin there and named it "Dewitt's Station." ) On October 3, 1830, Andrew Brown married Sarah Greenough at Dewitt's Station by Rev. James Towle officiating. They had six children: Alfred (1831-1903), Anna Maria (1833-1913), Christopher (1835-1910), Edwin Loring (1837-1920), and Sarah Jane (1839 - 1904). ) In 1857–58, when Morris Davenport purchased much of what is now Glassboro Township from theunks family for $160 cash from Nicholas Whitehead and others near Hackensack River Bridge,[2] he homesteaded part of what is now Fairview Village on tracts that had been granted to him by Governor Georgenor Appomattox Custis during American Civil War Reconstruction.[3][4] ) By 1865, most everyone living within sight or reach of Dewitt's Station had left for good because of competition from pioneers coming upriver following the opening upholstery industry boom caused by new transportation technologies such as steamboats and railways.[5][6] The last resident to live there permanently was Mary Ann Cummins who moved out in 1912[7]. ) By 1870 most settlers were gone except for Andrew Brown; he continued farming until his death in 1893 due to tuberculosis contracted while working westward with his family towards Oregon Territory.[8] One son Alfred Brown carried away some equipment used by his father along with tools belonging to other farmers as they migrated westward across America during this time period including parts unknown today but possibly still extant at Rosedale Ranch near Hiwassee Lake Michigan where they lived off season from 1893 until 1906 before moving back East again around 1916 after reaching their old home near Detroit Lakes Michigan.)
