In 1800, Fairview was a small settlement in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It consisted of about 25 homes and two churches. By 1825, the population had grown to 350 people. The town was named for Captain Gabriel Fairview (1769-1847), an American Revolutionary War veteran and founder of Newark, New Jersey. The first store in Fairview was opened by Moses Higginson in 1826. The business prospered until 1829 when it closed because of the Panic of 1829. In 1830, Gershom Livingston opened a general store on Main Street which continued to prosper until 1840 when it also closed because of the Panic of 1840. In 1841, Daniel Webster reopened the Webster family's bakery on High Street which continued to be successful until 1865 when it also closed due to the Civil War. In 1870, George Wickersham organized a wagon workshop on Low Road which prospered until 1875 when it also closed due to the Panic of 1880. In 1886, John Fenton built a frame grocery Store atrium on Market Square which he operated for 36 years before selling it to Alfred Smedley in 1928. Smedley operated it as a grocery store and then as an annex for Great Northern Paper Company from 1932-1935 before selling the property back to Fairview Township Administration in 1935. The township purchased all but one acre of what is now known as Park Avenue from Edwin Atherton for $1 million in 1955 and renamed it "FairVIEW PARK". The remaining acreage became known as "OldFairVIEW".

Fairview was founded by the Methodist Episcopal congregation in 1784. It became a borough in 1868 and an incorporated city in 1915. The population of Fairview was 5,296 at the 2000 census. The borough is located in Camden County, New Jersey, adjacent to Camden and Philadelphia. The first settlers to Fairview were Methodists who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1784. They built a log cabin on the current site of Fairview Elementary School. The town's first mayor, John Dickinson, served from 1785-1787. In 1868, Fairview became a borough after it was incorrectly reported as being part of Camden County when it was formed from parts of neighboring Camden Township. The fairgrounds that now occupy much of downtown Fairview were originally developed for agricultural purposes by farmers nearpresent-day Ridgewood Avenue and Market Street. The grounds also include two churches - First United Methodist Church (founded 1812) and Messiah Lutheran Church (founded 1834). In 1915, the City Council voted to become an incorporated city after protracted debate over whether or not it should remain a borough due to its rural character and lack of services available within its borders alone. At the time, incorporation offered more opportunities for development withinFairVIEW than did county government which remained unchanged since colonial times. As an incorporated city, FairVIEW enjoyed increased financial resources and infrastructure development including: a new library (1924), fire department (1927), public works department (1929), parks Department (1936), waterworks Department (1945), statistical center (1968) and extensive zoning changes which allowed for the construction of high-rise buildings throughouttown culminating withthe building boom that began around 1980s resulting in many new businesses and residences popping up around Downtown FairVIEW After years of decline during the late 1990s through early 2000s as a result of demographic shifts elsewhere within Camden County affecting both businesses and residents alike,,FairVIEW saw some resurgence starting around 2006 as developers began eyeing what had once been considered less desirable areas surroundingDowntown POINT & FAREWELL AVE
Fairview was founded in 1784 as a small farmstead on the east side of Trenton, New Jersey. It became an important township in 1815 and was incorporated as a borough in 1834. The main thoroughfare known today as Fairview Avenue ran through the township until it was bypassed by Route 9 near Ridgewood in the late 1940s.
