Fairview is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population of Fairview was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Area. The first settlers to FairVIEW were Englishman John and Judith Fairchild in 1795. They built a log cabin on the corner of Main and Spring streets. By 1800, they had also founded a gristmill on Creek Road near present-day Eastside Avenue and Indian Lane/Route 914 (now Essex Street). In 1802, they bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of Newark from Nicholas Biddle. The family developed the land into what is now FairVIEW Park. In 1834, George Washington Beale purchased 2,500 acres (1 thousand hectares) along Route 914 in what is now FairVIEW Park from Nicholas Biddle’s widow Lucy Beale for $120 per acre ($5 million today). He named it Bealesburg after himself and his brother General Ulysses S., Jr.. He leased this land to farmers for grazing purposes until he acquired it outright in 1857 for $2 per acre ($10 million today). As part of his agreement with these farmers, heresidents were allowed to plant corn, potatoes and other crops on their own property without gainful employment during the summer months when heeded byanimals on stately Antietam Heights above Bergenfield Township; but during winter months they were required to get work as agricultural Laborers under obligation to Mr. Beale or go hungry. Beale donated much of this land which still makes up most of FairVIEW Park today: some areas are seventy years old!
