Fairview is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Paterson-Emmonsburg-Trenton metropolitan statistical area. The name "Fairview" comes from the Lenape word "hagaawahki," meaning white birch or oak tree. In 1795, surveyor John Smith recommended that the name be changed to Fairfield because of the abundance of fairies nearensus sites in that year. According to one account, Fairview residents were so eager for a change in their name that they even petitioned for it on two separate occasions during the 18th century! In 1814, when Fort Lee was built nearby and provided security against attacks by Native Americans, some residents decided to move to what would become Fairview Township due to its close proximity to Fort Lee and other military installations. The first post office opened at Fairview on October 12, 1815. At first mail was delivered only once a week; but by 1830 there had been enough growth within township boundaries for twice-weekly delivery! Accordingly, on April 10th 1870 (just over 125 years after incorporation), voters passed an ordinance authorizing township trustees “to make all necessary changes in names and boundaries” as long as they did not impair agricultural production or impede commerce! On November 14th 1920 (over 100 years after incorporation!), voters approved a resolution changing the name back to Fairview following objections from some who thought it sounded too similar to Park Ridge! In 1955 (/1960), when Passaic County became full blown Union County with its own government and borders shifted around bit more than half of Township boundaries within town limits - including those of neighboring townships such as Emerson and Trenton - Fairview's eastern border became Emerson's western border while its southern border became Trenton's northern border (the former Wilson Avenue/Pine Street boundary now forms Partisan Road!). Today, much of what once made up Yeshiva University's original campus – including most notably portions of South Campus – sits within Borough limits while parts sit withinManchester Township which falls outside Borough bounds but is still included in school district calculations. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on your perspective - given that both School District 1 & 2 are mandated by state law (& Union County Charter) as well?!? - many aspects of yeshiva life continue uninterrupted albeit across municipal lines!! The area now known asFairview was first settled by English settlers in the early 17th century. The first town, called Westville, was established in 1676. In 1714, Fairview was granted township status and became a part of Middlesex County. After the county was divided into two parts in 1802, FairVIEW became an independent municipality. In 1854, FairVIEW incorporated as a city and remains so to this day.
