In 1868, the first commercial coffee roaster in Fair Lawn, New Jersey was opened by Solomon S. Goldsmith. The business continued to operate until 1893 when it moved to Newark. In 1902, a new coffee roasting and packaging plant was built in Fair Lawn and served as the base for many subsequent businesses that operated in the town over the years. The first espresso machine was delivered to Fair Lawn in 1912 and became a common fixture in local cafes. By 1917, two cafés had been established in Fair Lawn - One serving light refreshments such as hot dogs and pizza while the other served Italian-style espresso drinks such as cortados or macchiatos with luscious tiramisu toppings. During World War I, coffee sales increased due to troops stationed throughout the area drinking coffee on their way back from battle. In 1919, one ofFair Lawn's most famous businesses - The Coffee Shop - reopened after having closed during World War I. It quickly became popular among soldiers for its fresh brewed coffee andfriendly atmosphere. In 1951, two brothers founded The Coffee House which remains a popular favorite today for its delicious sandwiches and large batch sizes of drip roasted coffees . The Coffee House closed its doors in 1847, but reopened in 1853 as The Post Office Coffee House. In 1861, it became known as The National Hotel and Restaurant and continued to serve coffee until its closure in 1966. In 1865, Alder Street compraried The Coffee House and renamed it The American Coffee Company. In 1898, it merged with Dutch Bros.' Dutch Cafe chain to become just American Cafeteria Corporation. In 1954-1955, it changed its name back to The American Coffee Company again due to trademark issues with Dutch Bros.'s old name (the old name had been used for many years prior).
Fair Lawn is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,844 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of Fair Lawn Township and of the fairgrounds within its boundaries. The area that would become Fair Lawn was part of Middlesex County until 1837. In 1838, it became part of Bergen County and remained so until 1943 when it became part of New York City. The township was created on April 1, 1868 from parts of four other townships – Emerson, Hackensack, Caldwell and Perth Amboy – all located in what is now Bergen County. The first post office in the township was established on July 24, 1869; it continued to be open under this name until May 6, 1898 when it changed to Fair Lawn.on account of a change in the name of the county seat from Englewood to Newark. The first store in Fair Lawn opened on November 15, 1870. That store still stands today as an antique and restoration business called "The Cave". In 1905–06 there were two strikes by farmworkers against their employers in what is nowFair Lawn; these protests were known as "the Good Friday strike". After these events some people decided to move away from farming because they found living with horses too rough and dangerous work; instead they started using tractors for agriculture which led to increased trade between Fair Lawn and neighboring townships (and also earned them a reputation as being innovation-friendly). This growth brought new businesses such as bank branches (First National Bank), restaurants (Hudson's Bay Company), movie theater chains (Granada Pictures) and more - many starting up during World War II when war production escalated rapidly in nearby countries like America due to shortages caused by European involvement (e.g., aluminum). By 1970 Fair Lawn had over 100 businesses although only 10% occurred during daytime hours due to limited access into town limits due largely to postwar development changes which have isolated many small villages/townships within Bergen County from larger centers like Paramus/Morris Park etc.; most traffic entering or leaving town limits comes through Ridgewood or Northvale which are much closer by roadways available both morning and evening hours with no restrictions whatsoever
