The National Guard has been in Fair Lawn, New Jersey since the Revolutionary War. The first units of the National Guard were raised at a military encampment on Broad and Market Streets in 1775. In 1812, the Township was incorporated as a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey. On October 8, 1940, the United States Congress passed an act authorizing the National Guard to be used for emergency purposes during World War II. The act also called for the formation of guard battalions within each state. On January 1, 1941, all New Jersey townships had guard battalions and these battalions were redesignated as regimentals on April 1st of that year. On November 12th of that year, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law legislation creating the modern National Guard by consolidating several existing organizations including cavalry regiments (the 13th Regiment), infantry regiments (the 15th Regiment and 16th Regiment), artillery batteries (the 2nd Battalion, 4th Artillery Regiment), aviation squadrons (the 1st Squadron) and Marine detachments (the 3rd Battalion). At this time there were over fifty different organizations compriseing just under nine thousand men and women who served with distinction during World War II. The current patch worn by members of the Fair Lawn Township National Guard is one adopted in 1942 when order number 6754 was issued to commemorate “A Victory Over Japan” campaign which took place throughout North America between December 7-December 11 1944 It features an image of Admiral Chester Nimitz Commander in Chief US Pacific Fleet wearing a Rising Sun Division patch together with blue bandanna flying from his shoulder board

The nation’s first national guard units were raised in 1792 to help keep order during the Revolutionary War. And since then, they have served with distinction, fighting in every conflict from World War I to the Iraq War. Today, there are more than 33,000 active national guard troops across America – some 1 million men and women who serve without pay but whose number is only growing as we face new challenges such as terrorism and climate change. As we consider how best to invest in this important force – both now and into the future – we must remember why these organizations exist: To provide support for our county-level communities when needed most; to continue training ourtroops for missions beyond conventional war; and to ensure that all Americans have access to safe & affordable nationally Guard services

Fair Lawn is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It was formed on April 17, 1814 from the portions of Newton and Middletown townships. The population was 23,546 at the 2010 Census. The name originated from Fair Lawn Academy, a school founded in 1784 by Increase Mifflin. The borough is located on the eastern edge of Newark Liberty International Airport. According to the United States Census Bureau, Fair Lawn has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 21,824 people, 8,927 households, and 5,706 families residing in the borough. The population density was 636/sq mi (248/km²). There were 9,,305 housing units at an average density of 269/sq mi (115/km²). The racial makeup of Fair Lawn was 97% White European American and 2% African American. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 1%of the population. There were 8,,727 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57% were married couples living together, 12% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. 20%of all households were made up of individuals and 7% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. From its inception in 1790 until 1861, when it was abolished as part of the Civil War Amendments, the National Guard played an important role in American life. It served as a reserve force for federal troops during both world wars; it remains one of America’s most popular social services; and its members have provided countless patriotic expressions of support throughout our history. Today, there are more than 350 million Americans who identify as members of some form of national guard or reservist group—a figure that is likely to grow even further in coming years because many states now provide Guard units with significant financial assistance in order to keep them active and engaged on behalf of their citizens. As we enter into another decade marked by increasing global challenges and changes in technology that may impact how we maintain our security posture, it is critical that we understand why these organizations continue to play an important role in our society and how they can best serve society moving forward.
The National Guard was first organized on November 16, 1792, by The Constitution of the United States as an arm of the federal government to provide protection for the interests of the citizens. The National Guard has grown and evolved over time into a valuable resource for society and is now one of our most important institutions.
Fair Lawn, population 8,000 in 1879, became a borough on May 25, 1896. The town was founded by Englishmen who arrived in America as indentured servants. Fair Lawn's first selectman was John Fenton. In 1903 the borough purchased 2 acres of land at the corner of Elm and Livingston Streets from the Township of Caldwell for $2,500. In 1902-1903 two brothers - George W. and Harry A. Brown - built a large farmhouse on what is now Borough Hall Road (now Elm Street). The Brown Brothers ran a grocery and feed store until their death in 1958. They are buried at Cemetary #4 in Fair Lawn. In 1923 the Borough leased three blocks of land south of Market Street from the Township for $3,000 to build an annex to the old high school which housed both public schools (grades 1-12) and municipal services (police station, fire department). It was not until 1948 that an all-weather track was installed on what is now Borough Hall Road; this opened in 1951 when it replaced a horsecurve used by local farmers prior to this time. On November 16, 1954 Fair Lawn voters passed a resolution endorsing creation of Jersey City as an independent city with its own government structure and budgeting procedures within the State of New Jersey without reference to either state or federal governments as they then existed. On February 12, 1955 Governor Alfred Landon signed into law Act No.: 55-2 which created Jersey City as an independent city with its own government structure pursuant to Resolution No.: 54-1 passed by the Municipal Assembly on November 16th that year
