Englewood is a borough in New Jersey, United States. The population was 28,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Toms River Metropolitan Statistical Area. Englewood was incorporated as a borough on March 14, 1868, from portions of Hopewell Township and West Orange Township. On January 1, 1915, it became an independent city with the same name due to the merger of its two townships into one entity. The first store in what is now Englewood opened in 1868 by Ezekiel Potter and his wife Esther Potter on Third Street between Clinton Avenue and Parsippany Road. The Potters were early settlers in what would become Englewood and founded their grocery store near where Wasp Valley Road meets First Street today. In 1876, another early settler named George Haggerty opened a grocery store on Second Street between Morris Avenue and Washington Boulevard today known as Gable’s Grocery Company. Haggerty had come to NJ from Ohio prior to that year for business reasons; he had been convinced by friends who recommended him to open a store hereabouts after visiting several other stateside cities such as Philadelphia (where he became an agent for J&R Cement) and Baltimore (where he established himself as an importer/exporter). He arrived home just before Christmas of 1775 when England surrendered to American forces at Saratoga Springs following the Battle of Saratoga which ended the American Revolutionary War. It wasn't until 1886 when John Fenton started buying land around present day Weehawken Pointe development thatEnglewood began expanding rapidly into areas beyond its original boundaries becoming one of New Jersey's most populous municipalities with over 100 residents by 1900 despite only having 5 square miles total area! In 1907 Fenton donated 2 acres (0.8 km²) along Paramus Boulevard east of Route 29 to create what would later become Englewood Park allowing for further growth within this largely rural area! With this new property came increased access to transportation via public roads & railways which continue to play important roles in the community today including being home to both local high school & college athletics teams as well as providing easy access for residents during weekday mornings when these activities are conducted without interruption! A popular tourist spot throughout much of Englewood's history has been Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Parish Church located off Cypress Avenue adjacent to Route 29 - originally built as a small chapel used by farmers & other villagers seeking refuge from advancing Union troops during the Civil War - it soon became Recognized throughout America hosting services not only for Patriot soldiers but also those fighting against slavery across many Southern states thanks primarilyto generous contributions made by Mrs John Ahern RN who served alongside her husband Jeremiah during some very difficult times!
