Englewood is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton–Ewing area. The first Englewood settlers were Dutch and they arrived in 1664. They named the place "EngleWOOD" after one of their family's farms in that area. In 1701, brothers Peter and John Englewood purchased land from the Lenape people on what is now North Avenue in Englewood for $1 per acre (0.50 acres). In 1814, Joshua Stroud became the first white person to purchase land from Native Americans at what is now Broad Street and Second Avenue in Englewood for $5 per acre (2 hectares). He named his land "EngleWOOD". From 1800 to 1876, Englewood was under control of three different sets of British colonists: The Paterson Settlers (1810-1812), The Livingston Settlement (1824-1826), and The Morrisons (1836- 1840). Each group had its own governance structure which resulted in some unique features of Englewood today.

Englewood is a borough in New Jersey, United States. It was formed on April 14, 1876 from portions of Englewood Township. The population was 11,821 at the 2010 census. Englewood is located in the South Jersey Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to view Englewood were Dutch traders who landed there in 1624 as part of their search for an entrance into New Netherland. They called it "Willemstadt", after Count Willem de Witt and his son, Hendrick Valkenburg (1568-1629). English colonists also named the area "Englewood" after John Engles, a wealthy merchant from London who had purchased land here in 1670. The first recorded inhabitants of what is now Englewood were Native American Lenape people who lived along the Hackensack River valley before migrating westward during the 17th century. By 1773, all Lenape people living east of Trenton had been removed to captivity under British occupation. In 1836, developers James Dunlop and Nicholai Moukowsky bought 5,000 acres (20 km2) of forested land east of Newark on the border of Middlesex County and Union County for $1 million dollars. This became known as Dunlap's Forest because two partners – Dunlap himself and Samuel Morse – played a major role in its development. The land lay within present-day Englewood Township but was not annexed to that township until 1875 when it became a part of Bergen County through an act by Governor Augustus Stone Jr.. On April 14, 1876, following ratification by voters of a state constitution providing for municipal government within county borders, Amboy Township portion north of Route 9 became part of Engle wood while portions south and west were annexed to Amboy Township via separate referendum ballots which took place on July 8 & 25 respectively . On November 3rd 1870 , both Amboy Townships gained their full independence when they ratified an act granting them this status . Indian Removal Act - On December 1st 1863 President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the Indian Removal Act which led to the displacement and enslavement of approximately 60% (approximate)of Native Americans living within U S borders including those living in what is now Englewood Borough . This event has been dubbed “The Great Sioux War” due to reports that many civilians were killed as well as vast amounts of property lost including more than five square miles (10 km²) located near where Dunlap’s Forest now stands . Mukowski Purchase - In 1865 James Duryea acquired 2/5ths interest in Dunlap’s Forest from Simon Cameron with intent to develop it commercially . Although originally planned for residential use only concepts for commercial buildings began appearing soon afterwards with plans calling for a large factory or warehouse complex on site . Plans eventually evolved into what is today known as Crystal City Shopping Center which opened its doors on October 15th 1974

Englewood grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on a major crossroads and its access to transportation such as Route 9 and the Delaware River. The town's population reached 10,000 in 1892, but declined thereafter because of competition from nearby Jersey City and Paterson. In 1926, however, Englewood annexed neighboring Arlington Heights after an effort by Mayor Charles W. White to add more housing to the shrinking town center. The annexation made Englewood one of New Jersey's largest towns by population.
