Polk to create township form parts of that city with farms to provide labor for new construction projects in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The name comes from English engineering student George Fenton Engel (1792-1868), who had named one of his plantations "Englewood" after his home town near London. The borough was formed from portions of Upper Manhattan and Brooklyn on February 14, 1911 out of section 1128a (now called East Harlem) of Staten Island which had been annexed into New York City since 1898 as a result ofstatute 8vo §3(b). At first it consisted only of what are now Englewood Township and Ridgewood Borough; but within two years it had also added Hylan Heights (then Yeshiva Gardens), Flatbush Township (then Bensonhurst), Far Rockaway Township (then Midvale), Reggio Di Calabria Borough (then Valley Stream), and Woodhaven Borough (then Park Slope). Englewood is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 26,715. The name Englewood comes from English (later Dutch) meaning "forest clearing." The first Englewood settlers were Quakers who had left Philadelphia for religious reasons in 1768. In 1814, the New York and Pennsylvania Railroad was built through Englewood and it became an important transportation hub for goods between Newark and Manhattan. By 1847, Englewood had a small population of about 100 people and was considered part of Newark. During World War II, Englewood supported the war effort by manufacturing munitions at its arsenal. After the war ended in 1945, many businesses closed or moved out as technology changed and new companies emerged in the postwar period. However, some businesses such as JCPenney continued to operate until they were acquired by Sears Holdings Corporation in 1994. In 2001-2002, whenNJ Transit began planning to build two new lines - Line 1A from Midtown Center to South Jersey Station and Line 2 from Hackensack Terminal 3 to ElizabethTrain Station - Englewood voted against NJ Transit's plan because it would have required demolition of several homes along River Road which are now part of Union College Campus. In recent years there has been redevelopment of areas around town which has led to increased development activity including luxury apartments buildings on Linden Boulevard overlooking downtown; multiple restaurants and bars on Clinton Avenue; more than one dozen small shops near Linden Boulevard; a movie theater on Roosevelt Boulevard adjacent to State University of New York at Purchase; as well as construction taking place along both river roads with mixed use buildings being developed such as office space/retail/residential complexes next to schools while still maintaining access to river views
On November 3, 1834, the Township of Englewood was formed from portions of the Town of Union. The Township was named for George Washington and his wife Martha.
