Englewood, New Jersey is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 29,354. The name Englewood was given to the town by Elias Howe in 1836. The first Europeans to visit what is now Englewood were French traders and planters who landed there in 1676 as part of a trading expedition led by Pierre-Jacques Marquette. They named their new location "Aigues Mortes" (Dead Forts), after a nearby river where they built stockades against the Indians. In 1714, during Queen Anne's War between England and France, British forces burned down Aigues Mortes and replaced it with Fort George on the site ofpresent-day Englewood. The fort served as an artillery post for English units until it was abandoned in 1755 following the Treaty of Paris ending that war. The Dutch began settling in what is now Englewood dates back to 1688 when Pieter de Mol came over from Holland with his family and founded aestate called Amersfoort near present-day North Brunswick Township. De Mol's son Peter founded another estate called Westville which became Englewood after him. Dutch colonists started purchasing land throughout New Jersey beginning in 1693 when they voyaged upriver from what is now Rotterdam via Perth Amboy on Long Island to purchase holdings along the Delaware River estuary bordering Pennsylvania and Maryland at Port Royal (now Philadelphia). Many of these early purchases are still evident today including extensive tracts of land aroundEnglewood Lake located just south of Interstate 95 between Routes 1 & 2
