Englewood was a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The first Englewood post office opened in 1835. The name may be derived from English Englewood (now Edmonton), which is located to the east of Englewood and was then part of Middlesex County. In 1841, the town had a population of 10 residents and 5 schools; it contained only one street and two buildings. By 1850, however, the population had increased to 30 residents and 10 schools; there were also several churches in the town. In 1864-1865, Englewood became an American Civil War Union stronghold as Confederate General John Buford made his home here after retreating from Union forces during Battle of Gettysburg (). Afterward many Confederates relocated to this community due to its pro-Confederate sentiment during Reconstruction (). Since 1865 until 1947, when it became part of New Jersey municipality known as Newark–Jersey City Port Authority (), Englewood has been administered by both municipalities as a single entity with separate school systems and civic organizations within each municipality. During World War II much effort went into developing new munitions factories in nearby Elizabethtown while other plants were built outside of Englewood for use in war production (). At its peak enrollment in 1940-1941 (the last year for which data are available),Englewood's high school had a total student body comprising approximately 60% boys and 40% girls with about 29% black students (); about half of all children living within five miles (8 km) of school were white or Hispanic . As early as 1922-1923 local historian Harry Wiggin published "A History Of The Town Of Englewoods Township", which chronicled various aspects including land grants given to individuals or families who donated property for township purposes (). After Dean Jameson's win over incumbent Samuel Siver on November 7th 1917 – helping inaugurate what would turn out to be an influential period for Democratic Party candidates throughout New Jersey – numerous improvements occurred within the community including better transportation links thanks to investments by then Mayor Jameson himself (), better library facilities () along with additions such as tennis courts (), football stadium (), swimming pool (), cinema complex (), public park () and more roads being graded through eminent domain (). This period also saw significant advancements being made within social services provided by then Township Administrator Charles Haggerty (); these included child welfare measures such as adoption service center ()) among others before becoming fully autonomous under Municipal Manager Franklin D'Angelo beginning in 1951(). On December 15th 1951 following years long discussion between various municipal leaders culminating with final approval from voters via referendum () - taking effect on January 1st 1952 - Newark–Jersey City Municipality was formally established consisting of both municipalities plus any annexed areas situated east or north of Edison Avenue between Raritan Avenue and Boundary Street having no voting privileges subordinate thereto whatsoever - effective immediately pending final review/approval from NJ Governor Robert Taft (). A $5 million bond issue ensuring that all affected properties would be taxpayers funded through taxation going back 100 years was also approved prior to incorporation totals reaching $60 million .
