Englewood is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,631 at the 2010 census. It has been the county seat of Bergen County since 1849 and is located on the southern border of New York City. The Englewood Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The first Englewood settlement was founded by George Clinton in 1764 as part of an effort to gain control over a tract of land that lay between Hackensack and Perth Amboy. At its peak, Englewood had a population of 10,000 people and boasted two large churches, one from 1784 and the other from 1802. However, economic problems soon led to shrinkage and social unrest which led to several fires throughout the 1800s. The most significant event occurred when fire destroyed much of downtown in 1828 which left many structures including churches with little hope for repair or restoration. In 1849, following his victory in the presidential election that year, President James Kapp created what would become known as Kapp's Parkland division within Bergen County consisting largely of territory that had been confiscated from Dutch settlers during the American Revolution. This area included what is now Englewood along with portions of Asbury Park and Passaic Counties around it. In 1861, Kapp approved plans for an additional town (known as Irvington) within Amboy Township to serve as both county seat and rural community center; however this plan also failed to gain approval due to local opposition. A new proposal for a county seat was made official by Kapp on October 1, 1871; however this idea too met with resistance due to fears that it would lead to further subdivision within Bergen County and increase tax rates among its residents. On November 15th, 1870 – just four weeks after Kapp's suggestion – voters elected William Latham as their new county executive; however this decision did not sit well with some members of the community who felt that their interests were being ignored by Latham's administration Latham resigned from office on December 12th after disagreements arose about how best to move forward with reforms proposed by superintendent Ezra Stiles – including creating an assessor-general position responsible for all property values within Bergen County – which were seen as necessary for meeting financial goals set forth in Kapp's recommendation . On January 3rd 1872 – less than two months after becoming commissioner – Stiles recommended thatEnglewood be annexed into Rahway Township because it possessed similar demographics (largely Irish) while Rahway lacked services such as schools or transportation options available in neighboring municipalities . Despite objections voiced by some citizens living inside Englewood limits despite claims they could only attend services provided within their own township boundaries - annexation became official on March 2nd . The city began rapid growth following annexation into Rahway Township: By 1880 there were more than 20 businesses operating inside city limits while 5 miles away outside they served an estimated 30%+ market share for retail goods sales alone !!
