Elmwood Park was a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. It was located on the border of Somerset and Burlington Counties. Elmwood Park had a population of 710 as of the 2010 census. The town is now part of Elizabethtown Township. Elmwood Park was established by farmers in 1852 with a population of 10 people. In 1887, Elmwood Park and nearby West Orange developed into one large community with a post office, school, and churches. The community lost its importance after World War II when larger towns were created in the area and industry replaced agriculture as the mainstay of the economy. In 1961, Elmwood Park merged with neighboring Elizabethtown to form one municipality. In 1995, the township announced it would close all five schools in Elmwood Park due to budget cuts. On October 1, 2009, ELMWOOD PARK TOWNSHIP announced that it will be merger with Elizabethtown Township effective January 1st 2020 - this would create one municipality which has an estimated population of over 20K residents (the current estimate for ElmlwodPark is 17K).
The Elmwood Park community was founded in 1892 when the Newark and Elizabeth Railroad built a station on the then-new Elmwood Avenue. The community developed rapidly, with many homes being built in what is now Elmwood Park. Despite its rapid growth, the Elmwood Park community had relatively few residents until World War II when it increased significantly due to the influx of soldiers and their families who were stationed at nearby Fort Monmouth during the war. As Fort Monmouth became an inactive military base after the war, new families began moving into Elmwood Park and other parts of Newark County. The population of Elmwood Park peaked at over 10,000 in 1950 before slowly declining over the next several decades as more people moved to larger towns and cities in New Jersey. However, recent research has shown that there are still extant portions of the Elmwood Park community that are highly populated with elderly residents, young children, andworking adults who maintain close relationships with their home communities.
