On November 25, 1972, as a result of the township's dissolution, Elmwood Park became an unincorporated community within Jersey City. The first settlers to Elmwood Park were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1789. They erected a small farmstead around what is now North Huntingdon Street. The Susquehanna Company purchased the land from the Dutch settlers in 1802 and donated it to the Township of Jersey City for use as public ground. The first mayor of Jersey City was James Brophy (1797-1857). He dedicated much of his mayoral term to enhancing public facilities inJersey City including funds for improvements at Elmwood Park. In 1825, Brophy increased funding for Elmwood Park with $5,000 from wealthy citizen John D'Angelo. This donation encouraged further private donations which helped make Elmwood Park one of Newark's most popular tourist destinations during this time period. In 1865, when Jersey City became an independent city under New York state law, it annexed all but one township in Essex County including Elk Wood Park which remained within Jersey City's jurisdiction until 1971 when it too became an unincorporated community within NJCYZ boundaries
