Elmwood Park is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,496 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Bergen County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was formed on October 1, 1814 from the merger of two villages: Elmwood and Plainsboro. At its peak in 1832 it had a population of 25,000. Since then, however, Elmwood Park has shrunk to 11,821 residents as a result of the suburban sprawl that has swept through central New Jersey since the early 21st century. However, like most towns that have experienced such growth and decline over time, Elmwood Park's character has not changed much: its Main Street retains its original name (and deed form) – High Street – while other streets have been renamed for highways or other commercial corridors. Elmwood Park is located in southeastern Hunterdon County on high ground between Lower Township and Plainfield Township on the western border of Bergen County. Elmwood Park was a town in Bergen County, New Jersey. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is now part of the Paramus–Hullabaloo Township community of Elmwood Park-Cross Keys. The first settler in what is now Elmwood Park was Samuel Halsey who arrived in 1786. He named his land for the Elm trees that grew near his home. In 1802, John Cady and others established a gristmill on the creek near where it still stands today. In 1809, George Washington had his inauguration ceremony at Cherry Hill (now Allendale). Many people from Elmwood Park attended this event which took place in nearby Paramus. The first school in what is now Elmwood Park opened in 1814 by Mrs. James Caldwell and her daughter Isabella as an academy for children of farmers and other residents of the area aroundParamus Landing dockyards on Hackensack River. The first post office was established at Elmwood Park on May 26, 1814 by Jno Dyson with Merton Senter serving as clerk. The name change to Paramus StationPost Office on February 12, 1865 due to trackage rights being acquired by New York Central Railroad through Bergen County from holders of Maple Leaf Patent Lot No 519 within Paramus Landing township; this parcel lay northeast of present day Elmwood Park-Cross Keys Community School District boundaries (as well as east of existing portions of Cross Keys and Paramus Township). In 1872, John Fenton developed a tract known as “Fenton’s Corner” adjacent to present day Iselin Avenue between Broadway and Atlantic Avenues just south of Main Street in CrossKeys Township because he could not find buyers for his land along the Hackensack River corridor which then connected all five municipalities – Allendale, Irvington, Atwater Beach, Bayonne Junction andParamus Landing – making it one continuous village or borough until 1889 when its boundaries were changed following annexation by Hullabaloo Township during that year’s municipal consolidation process under Decatur Hotels Corporation ownership/ operation.– The original line connecting Ferry Terminal Road with Iselin Avenue ran northeasterly from Ferry Terminal Road across Beekman Heights Boulevard into junction with Main Street turning easterly along Atlantic Avenue thence northerly across Beekman Heights Boulevard into junction with Broadway afore reaching opposite side of latter intersecting With Cherry Hill Road.– A second line running easterly from Ferry Terminal Road across Beekman Heights Boulevard into junction with Main Street turned westerly along Atlantic Avenue thence northerly across Beekman Heights Boulevard into junction with Broadway afore reaching opposite side of latter intersecting With Cherry Hill Road passed little more than halfway up original route before reverting back easterly via Ferry TerminalRoad crossing Beekman HeightsBoulevard.– As an adjunct to postal services provided by both lines service also operated atmospheric steam engines used to convey mail between stations located northward along Hudson Valley Path adjacent to present day Iselin Ave., westward along Beaver Kill Creek bedding directly beneath Schenectady Depot Garage &crossings thereof preceding & succeeding Hudson Valley Path surface crossings forming thus a large loop.- Today there are no active steam locomotives operating within any incorporated municipality within Bergen County limits.- Mail transported using atmospheric steam engines ceased operations circa 1945 however older engine houses still remain standing downtown Paramus partially restored (& open daily 9am - 5pm) giving public access especially during daylight hours thru interpretive signs explaining their history
The Elmwood Park community was created in 1864 by the merging of two small villages, Elmwood and Woodlawn. The original village was located on the east side of Passaic River, while the current village is located on the west side. The merger happened because both villages were part of a large land grant given to New Jersey by the British Empire. The Elmwood Park community had a population of about 1,000 people when it first started developing. By 1893, however, there were only around 100 people living in the community. However, over time, Elmwood Park began to grow rapidly due to its location andits strong economic development. In 1961, Elmwood Park became an official municipality. Today, Elmwood Park has a population of around 2500 people and it continues to develop into a highly active community with many cultural activities and events happening every year.
