Elmwood Park, New Jersey is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,849 at the 2010 census. The name Elmwood Park was given to the town by Colonel Augustus Elmwood and his family in 1856. The first settler in what would become Elmwood Park was Abram Spooner who arrived in 1795. In 1838, John Prentice bought of land from Abram Spooner and built a house on it which he named "Prentice's Grove". There were several other settlers before maple syrup production became a significant industry in the area. In 1856, Colonel Augustus Elmwood purchased of land from John Prentice for $1,000 cash and renamed it "Elmwood Park." He moved his family to the new community and began purchasing additional property over time. By 1860, he had acquired . In 1862, he donated an acre (0.40 km²) of land to the town for school purposes and named it "Emmontown Road." In 1865-1966, he also donated an acre (0.40 km²) of land to be used as a playground and park. The borough suffered during World War II with many homes destroyed or damaged by bombing raids; however, Elmwood Park managed to maintain its small-town feel despite the difficulties. The post-war era saw several changes with downtown becoming more commercialized while other sections of the town continued to operate as small villages until 1978 when consolidation occurred across Morris County with Elmwood Park joining the rest of Morris Township into one unified municipality under then Mayor Adolfo Garcia III..
