The first coffee roaster in Elizabeth, New Jersey was The Dutch Bros. Coffee House in 1853. The business was founded by Joban van der Velde and his brother, Cornelis de Velde. They roasted coffee until 1856 when they moved to what is now the Gilded Cage on Market Street. In 1861, they opened a second store on DeKalb Avenue which continued to operate until 1966. In 1865, Joban van der Velde married Adele there and the business became known as The Van Der Veldes Coffee Shop. He died in 1897 but his wife continued the business until her death in 1949. From 1949-1967, the shop was run by their son John Fenton Van Der Velde Jr., who also served as president from 1967-1972. In 1972, John Fenton Jr.'s widow donated the business to the city of Elizabeth for use as an education center called The Dutch Bros./Elizabeth School of Coffee Roasting & Brewing. It reopened in 1976 as a museum and continues to operate today as an educational institution focused on coffee culture and history
