The name Eatontown comes from English settlers who named it after their town of Eaton in Yorkshire, England. The first Europeans to visit Eatontown were Dutchman Johannes Vos and his brother-in-law Jacob Heckel in 1674. They called it "Willemstadt," meaning "the place where Willem I was born." In 1847, John Haines and George Stephenson built a railroad through the township which made it possible for people to get to work in the region. By 1870, there were over 200 stores and businesses in the village that included grist mills, lumberyards and sawmills as well as residences for government officials such as Ulysses S. Grant and Grover Cleveland. In 1892, he founded what would become Atlantic Telephone Company with fellow NYCTA founder Samuel Morse and soon developed into one of North America's leading telephone companies with its own lineaments stretching all the way to Canadalia

Eatontown is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Eatontown was founded by German immigrants in 1802 as a small farming community on the banks of the Delaware River. In 1825, it was annexed to Princeton and became known as "Princeton & Eatontown". The two towns merged in 1898 to form one municipality with a population of 3,500. By 1912, the population had grown to 10,000 and by 1926 it had reached 15,000. The postwar years were tough for Eatontown; its economy depended upon manufacturing jobs in nearby Wall Township but these declined after World War II. However, during the early 1960s through 1970s there was an influx of Italian-Americans who began working in local businesses such as clothing stores and pharmacies. This led to increased economic development which has led to new housing developments being built on both sides of the river since then including another former township called “Cranford” which straddles what is now Route 904 close to where Princeton formerly sat
Eatontown was founded in 1814 by Ezekiel Cooke and his wife Catharine. The town quickly became a popular stop for travelers on the New Jersey Turnpike. Today, Eatontown is a small community of around 2,000 people that features its own shopping center, entertainment district, and public school system.
