Thanks to the United States Army, Eatontown has a rich history of being a military town. From the 18th century through World War II, soldiers have been stationed in and around the community. The presence of an army has turned Eatontown into a center for all things military-related, from hobby stores to event venues. Some of the first soldiers to arrive in Eatontown were members of the 1st New Jersey Regiment, which was organized on October 17, 1777. The regiment was disbanded on September 30, 1778. But soon after its disbandment, troops began arriving in and around town for what would become known as the Continental Army Era. The 1st New Jersey Regiment wasn’t alone in garrisoning Eatontown; other units included companies from both the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment and 3rd Rhode Island Regiment. These forces served under General George Washington during his tenure as commander of the ContinentalArmy during the American Revolution. After the war ended, many soldiers returned home but some stayed behind to help form makeshift militias that patrolled local waterways and Skies while awaiting orders from up north. On December 14, 1783, General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga Springs after losing Battle of Saratoga Creek in North America’s largest battle ever fought by colonial forces- one that helped establish British control over much of present day New York State (and parts of Vermont). Eatontown is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,406 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Paterson–Ansonia–Middletown, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Eatontown was Nicholas Wilkinson who arrived on May 10, 1777 and set up a farmstead on the east side of this town. The first post office in Eatontown was established on February 19, 1814. In 1831, all of Sussex County were included within the newly formed Township of Warren Township which also included present-day Mahoning Valley and parts of Cumberland County. On April 14, 1832Eatontown became incorporated as a village by an act of the New Jersey Legislature under the name “Eatonville” after John Eaton who donated land for its erection and who also served as its first Mayor. The village rapidly grew due to its location near two important transportation routes: Route 9 (the Delaware River)and Route 22 (New York State's Turnpike). By 1850 it had over 1,000 residents and had built several churches including one dedicated to St. John Baptist which still stands today inside what is now known as Eaton Hall Schoolhouse off Main Street. The village reached its peak during the early 1800s with manufacturing and commercial activity focusing around two mills: Sibley & Sons Mills (now part of Muhlenberg College) located on Main Street just north ofpresent-day Town Hall Drive; and Dickson & Co.'s Foundry located across from Haddonfield High School on Market Street where many local Improvements were made such as ample room for public swimming pools both boys and girls – features that continue to be enjoyed by locals to this day! On July 1st 1870 when new township boundaries were ratified following approval by voters in a referendum they merged with neighboring Warren Township into one unit entitling it to become “Eatontown” Borough/City which happened without any formal announcement or vote taking place! This action created much excitement amongst residents as it represented an official change in status quo that would allow them more say about their community - something they vigorously pursued through promotional campaigns that continued until ultimate incorporation into City status 5 years later! In 1892 when Borough/City status was achieved following another referendum vote Eatontown began enjoying all the benefits associated with having city government includingspeeding up access to essential services like policing & fire protection; free streetlights; zoning authority for building & zoning purposes; exclusive right to lay down brick streetscape; etc.–an unheard of privilege at that time! In addition there was growing interest among citizens in forming their own clubs & organizations such as Masonic Lodge #3 which founded Arena Ballroom Grill – now home to numerous events throughout year long period! On October 20th 1914 during World War I Dearborn Heights Cemetery opened within perimeter defined by old limits then existing surrounding borough/city limits providing burials for soldiers killed alongside those from other municipalities located westward extending into Bergen County beyond Fourth Avenue onto Dutch Kills Swamp while Gravesites remained open within original borough limits along Second Avenue continuing into Mahoning ValleyWestward expansion prompted new cemetery construction adjacent First Avenue bridge crossing Hackensack Creek resulting in increased burial demand!! Today Dearborn Heights Cemetery remains one of only 8 remaining active military cemeteries nationwide serving Warrior Families worldwide!!!
