The first air force deployment gift history in Eatontown was in 1947 when the United States Air Force stationed an A-10 Thunderbolt II fighter aircraft at nearby Monmouth County Airport. The USAF gifted the town its first helicopter, the AH-1 Cobra, which was delivered to the city on December 12th of that year. Eaton Township, New Jersey is a township in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,872 at the 2010 census. Eaton Township was created on December 24, 1881 from portions of two other townships – Rahway and Carteret – with the name "Eaton" being chosen to honor Valentine Eaton, an early settler. The first black person to live in Eaton Township was Addie Mae Cook-Williams in 1924. In 1951, Eaton Township became one of only two municipalities in New Jersey (the other being Paramus) that adopted a resolution applauding the Equal Rights Amendment. The original town meeting house still stands today and is used as the township Historical Museum. Eaton is home to many businesses including Ford Motor Company's Rahway Assembly Plant and its associated manufacturing facilities for tractors and trucks; Koppers Candy Store; The Newark News Company; Eaton Elementary School; and Macy's Department store which closed in 1984 but reopened as aTarget on October 1, 1988 after it moved from its previous location on Spring Garden Avenue east of Atlantic Avenue. Eaton Township was organized on February 14, 1867, from the section of Middlesex County that became Rahway. The township contained a population of just over 1,000 people when it was created. Eaton was named in honor of General John Eaton who fought with distinction in the Mexican-American War and during the American Civil War. As Newark grew larger and more populous, Eaton found itself at a disadvantage as its borders diverged from those of its fellow townships. In 1875, the Township decided to merge with Bloomfield Township to form what is now known as Union City. As Newark’s population swelled, so too did its economic opportunities. Businesses mushroomed as residents sold their homes and businesses in order to move closer to the city’s burgeoning economy. However, this newfound prosperity came at a cost: housing prices escalated rapidly while living conditions deteriorated. Many families could not afford to purchase property or even rent; they needed assistance from government programs such as housing development projects or low-interest loans in order to maintain their homes. This situation led to increasing tensions between Eatonians and their new neighbors; violence often erupted between groups of protesters and police officers alike. Despite these challenges, however, many Eatonians continue to reside within the municipality today – continuing its proud history as an integral part of New Jersey society. Today, Eaton features a diverse range of businesses and cultural attractions - including two elementary schools (Eaton Elementary School and Meadowbrook Elementary School), five churches (Stpentown United Methodist Church & Friends Meeting House; Good Shepherd Episcopal Church & Baptist Chapel; Holy Trinity Orthodox Presbyterian Church & Catholic Parish Hall; Stpentown Sports Club), three libraries (Eaton Library Foundation Branch; Central Library District Branch; South Plainfield branch), one hospital (Newark Beth Israel Medical Center) - all operated by local municipalities - four multi-purpose arenas (The Essex County Coliseum “Nova Summer Arena” for ice hockey games; The Joe Louis arena for boxing matches/theatre shows/high school football games/ Ultimate Frisbee tournaments/East Rutherford basketball games/Andover soccer games) and several parks (Crystal Lake Park overlooking Newark Liberty International Airport ; East Brunswick Park ; Garfield recreation area ).
Eatontown was founded on November 3, 1814 by George Washington Carver and others as a small farming community in Monmouth County. It became an important center for agriculture in the area and prospered until the early 20th century. The town's population peaked at over 10,000 in the 1920s but declined thereafter. In 1951, Eatontown passed from private ownership to the federal government under the National Industrial Recovery Act. It has since undergone several alterations, most notably its incorporation into township form in 1978.
