In 1714, English colonists arrived and founded Princeton Township west of East Orange on land that had been granted by Sir George Carteret. East Orange, New Jersey is a borough in Union County, New Jersey. The population was 27,569 at the 2010 census. East Orange is one of five municipalities located within the Camden metropolitan area and is considered to be part of the Camden-Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now East Orange were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1664. The name "East Orange" was derived from an Indian word meaning "place where there are trees." In 1773, British General James Montgomery made his headquarters here after victories over French and Spanish forces during the American Revolutionary War. In 1857, the town became a village when it joined Union Township. On November 3 of that year, voters passed a resolution stating that they would like to become a borough on principles of internal self-government rather than having their status as a township remain unchanged for practical reasons. During World War II, many people from East Orange came to work on Roosevelt Roads leading into New York City or other war-related jobs. After the war ended and most workers returned home, some businesses reopened but others succumbed to attrition or move out of state because of competition from larger local businesses. Despite this downturn in business fortunes and several attempts by the Borough Council to establish economic development initiatives, little change occurred until the early 21st century when new technologies led to growth in online marketing and new office developments along Route 76 north of town center (now known as Edison Boulevard). In 2017–2018, residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of creating a city charter with full voting rights for all residents not just those living within east orange borough boundaries which would then allow for annexation by east orange if it met certain conditions including approval by both chambers of government as well as financial stability measures such as an annual budget surplus and having no outstanding debts (the latter two being thresholds previously set by previous councils). On October 8th 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt delivered his address at Latham Park Reserve on Long Branch Road dedicated to promoting agricultural industry throughout New Jersey via what are now called Rural Development Administration programs which included land acquisition grants amounting up to $15 million dollars annually for smallholders through Purchase Price Assistance Programs programmes with various partners including Rutgers University's Agricultural Experiment Station - later renamed Forest Preserve Management Agency under Mayor Robert Wagner - also providing seed money for farmers interested in growing upland fruits such as apples or grapes; hogs were originally kept at White Sands Arsenal where feed was also procured from surrounding farms; apple exports began soon afterwards with crates arriving daily predominantly from Newark Liberty International Airport; Crossett Sparrows became common due to tree cover scarcity across much of eastern NJ resulting primarily from severe winters during winter 1969/1970 followed by unprecedented drought years 1981-1982 & 1991-1992
