The community of East Orange, New Jersey was founded on November 10, 1764 by the Dutch in what is now Hunterdon County. The town was named for the East Orange family of landowners who donated land to form the town. The first permanent settler arrived in 1765 and began trading with the Native Americans in what is now Hunterdon County. By 1800, East Orange had a population of around 100 people and a small school. On November 15, 1814, General Washington led an army through Essex County to attack Fort Lee and drive the British out of North America. In recognition of this event, East Orange was renamed "Washington Heights" after General Washington's headquarters were located there. In 1848, during the American Civil War, East Orange sided with the Union side and fell to Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. After the war ended, many homes in town were destroyed or taken over by soldiers and their families as barracks. However, many residents returned home early in 1865 when it became clear that New York would not recognize California as part of the United States because of its actions during the war. On December 14th 1865, President Andrew Johnson signed Proclamation No 1 which declared all former Confederate states Un-American and ordered them to be re-organized into independent nations within two years or face economic sanctions from Congress. This action caused great anger among many Eastern Shore residents who felt that their towns had been betrayed by federal government officials who they thought could have helped them win back their fallen homelandmen’s respectability at a time when such things mattered most to them emotionally as well as politically - something that still rankles some today! After Reconstruction came about following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (1863), many African Americans left eastern Shore communities such as East Orange for southern plantationsParamount Plantations due to better working opportunities available elsewhere in America while white men continued to hold power behind closed doors via patronage system within various government offices including those associated with military recruitment efforts - all while black slaves remained unpaid laborers performing manual labor until their emancipation in 1865! Many businesses were established throughout these years including grocery stores (Jolly Bags & Grocery Store being one example) along with several churches also opening up shop during this time period; however most importantly through education initiatives such as Free School Day/Weekend which allowed children of low income parents access free public education from morning until night throughout MUCH OF THE AMERICAN SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE! This was unheard of back then especially given that schools were frequently aligned more closely with local church services than providing taught knowledge!!! During this time period too much emphasis was placed on charitable work rather than actually creating productive jobs for citizens... nonetheless I believe it has ultimatelyaffected our economy positively albeit slowly overall
