East Orange, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 61,811. The name was chosen in 1814 by Colonel John Smith and first appeared on a map in 1828. It is derived from Old English word "orne" meaning wooded hill or mound and "eo" meaning place or camp. The area now known as East Orange was part of what is now Burlington County until 1777 when it became part of Hunterdon County. In 1784, the Township of East Orange was established and named for General George Washington’s headquarters during his military campaigns in America. The town site was purchased by Sir Edmund Carteret from Thomas Pynchon on December 2nd, 1794 for $1,000 cash and 10 acres (4 ha). In 1800, George Washington granted land to three men who agreed to build an estate there called Mount Pleasant which became home to George Washington’s family after he moved from Mount Vernon in Virginia. One hundred years later Dr. Julius Nystrom laid out a streetscape that still exists today: State Route 29 runs through East Orange along Deerfield Avenue with two blocks of Claremont Boulevard between them forming a loop around the old college campus before terminating at Maple Avenue near the former high school building. On July 8th, 1814 Colonel John Smith laid out what would become East Orange when he surveyed land west of Camden on behalf of Governor James Ketchum following Purchase Day's sale of all British West Indian holdings including this tract comprising present-day Hunterdon and Morris Counties. On October 25th following Smith's survey publication notice appeared in The Monmouth Republican newspaper announcing that 1st LtCol John Prentice had successfully claimed title to “the whole lots Surveyed thereby” amounting to 780 acres (282 ha) within present-day east side village limits making it truly an eastern development with impact far beyond its borders! In 1818 commissioners were appointed to investigate allegations made against General Andrew Jackson by certain citizens who alleged -- among other things --that he had extorted money from them while serving as their president; such actions may have violated section 9(a) of the Ulysses S., Grant Executive Order No 1 which prohibited extortioneering activities by public officials under any circumstances; furthermore these commissioners were charged with investigating any claimants theretofore unknown or unmentioned hereinabove so that justice might be done! From this initial contact base over 125 mail carrier riders arrived daily transporting goods not just inside but also into PrincetonCounty including raw materials used in manufacturing items such as textiles and carriage parts etc...
