The United States Navy has a long and colorful history in Dumont, New Jersey. The Naval Reserve Command was organized in 1922 and the first naval unit to be raised in Dumont was the 1st Naval District's torpedo boat squadron, which arrived on July 5 of that year. The squadron operated from Chatham Island until 1934 when it moved to Montauk Point. In 1938, the Squadron became an Amphibious Squadron when the USS Constitution (CV-4) joined America's military alliances and began operations with amphibious forces off Guadalcanal. In 1942, after World War II had ended, the 1st Naval District activated its second naval unit; USS Ranger (AS-5). This ship served as a patrol vessel for New England waters before being towed by tugboats to Norfolk where she would serve as part of Destroyer Squadron Fifteen. She was decommissioned in 1946 but recommissioned three years later as USS Yorktown (CV-18),serving until she was decommissioned in 1960. USS Ranger is now preserved at Maritime Museum of Delaware located at Pier 3 in Lewes, Delaware. In 1962, USS Yorktown's successor; USS Enterprise (CVN-64) became flagship for Destroyer Squadron Thirteen and served until her decommissioning in 1982. She is now preserved at Philadelphia Naval Air Station where she can be visited during open house weekends from May through October. In 1969, USS Enterprise collided with another ship while underway off California Coast Guard Base Carmel Bay resulting in over 50 crew members being lost including Captain John F Kennedy who later died as a result of injuries sustained from the accident. On December 12th of that year five sailors were awarded Medals of Honor for their actions during that collision which helped improve safety procedures within the United States Navy fleet overalls thereafter. From 1970-1972 there were two more collisions which resulted in one death each time:USS Buchanan (DDG-26) collided with SS Jeremiah O'Brien while underway near Guantanamo Bay Cuba onOctober 14th 1971 andUSS Pueblo (LPD-1) collided with Norwegian tanker Høgskolen Vår on May 8th 1972 whilst patrolling off Wallis Islandobaleno Islandsoff Chile These events led to increased awareness within destroyer crews about better maritime security measures and improved communications between ships while underway or within range of shore batteries

Dumont was a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,526 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern border of Hunterdon Township and is part of the Hazleton metropolitan area. The first European settler in Dumont was Nicholas Decker in 1796 who arrived with his family from Pennsylvania. In 1814, John Nicholson founded a gristmill here which became known as Nicholson's Mill. A post office called Dumont was established in 1824 and remained in operation until 1888. In 1870, George Jorgensen purchased 1,200 acres (500 hectares) of land east of Dumont for $10 per acre. He built a large farmhouse here which remains standing to this day. Jorgensen served as Mayor of Dumont from 1902 to 1904 and also held other offices including supervisor of schools and justice of the peace. In 1915, industrialist Julius Kahn bought 1,000 acres (500 hectares) northeast of Dumont for $10 per acre from Jorgensen's heirs. His mill there still stands today – it produces flour for many local restaurants and grocery stores as well as paper products such as insulation foam and carpeting). Kahn began expanding his mills into new territory throughout the 1920s and 1930s; by 1938 he had planted 6 million trees on his property alone! The mill closed its doors for good in 1990 after years of decline due to competition from foreign imports and technological advances.
The Dumont community was established in 1881 by George and Martha Dumont. In 1898, the Dumont Schoolhouse was built. The community experienced a period of growth in the early 1920s when it became home to many successful businesses including the First National Bank, A & P Department Store, and the United Cigar Company. However, during World War II much of the community was destroyed by fire which left many homes and businesses abandoned. Today, Dumont is a small neighborhood with few remaining structures from its earlier days.
