The history of the Navy deployed gift tradition in Dumont, New Jersey dates back to World War II. The town was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1814, and was a major center for the maritime industry. During the war, the town came to be known for its production of munitions. In 1944, Dumont’s plant became one of three plants used by the United States Army to produce artillery shells. The shell production facility continued through the Cold War years until it closed in 1992. Since 1945, the town has been home to two Naval Base installations: Naval Station Atlantic (NAVY) and Naval Station Wilmington (Navy). NAVY has responsibility for all aspects of military forces onshore and afloat in New Jersey; while NAAF oversees all naval activities on Delaware Bay. Together they house over 50 buildings and 6 miles of waterfront property that provide ample space for both offices and recreational facilities. Today, NAVY remains an important presence in Dumont - with a detachment stationed at Dover Air Force Base - but NAAF is now responsible for providing auxiliary services to numerous municipalities along Delaware Bay including Asbury Park, Brigantine Island, Egg Harbor Township, Harrington Beach, Hightstown Airport/Sea-Tac Airport Joint Terminal Complex and many more.

Dumont is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Reading, PA-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settled area of Dumont was on the east side of Freeman Creek and included areas now known as Boylston Township and Huntingdon Township. The name was derived from Monson Pond which lay between what are now Boylston and Huntingdon townships and which formed the border of Dumont with Penns Grove Township. Dumont was incorporated as a borough on February 15, 1872, from parts of Hunterdon Township and Morris County. On November 3rd, 1907, it became a town when it merged with Clinton Township to form the Philadelphia- Reading metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, Dumont has a total area of , all land. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 5,814 people living in Dumont Borough (excluding Birdstown), including 4,803 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53% were married couples living together, 9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31% were non-families. 24%of all households were made up of individuals and 7% had someone who lived alone who was 65 years old or older. Dumont, New Jersey is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. Dumont is located on the Delaware River about east of Trenton and west of Camden. The first permanent settlers in what is now Dumont were two families from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1739. They named their new village after François-Jacques Dumont, a French military officer who had fought for the British against the French during the Seven Years' War. The village was established on April 10, 1740 by colonists Peter Keker and his wife Anna May Keker. In 1812, Dumont became part of New York State as part of the Morristown District. On February 14, 1814, it was merged with other towns in Morris County to form Dumont Township (later renamed Morris County). The township remained an independent municipality until it was incorporated into Princeton Borough on January 1, 1912. Dumont is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,452 at the 2010 census. The name comes from "dune" ( French for sandbank), which is how the early settlers called the area where Dumont now stands.
The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Dumont were Italian laborers working on a construction project led by Colonel John Pemberton. The laborers were transported overland from Canada and then taken by boat to work on the project. On November 12, 1764, Pemberton's forces attacked and burned down the Fort William Johnson site near present-day Dumont in what is known as the Battle of Monmouth Park. In 1814, General James Knyphausen used Fort William Johnson as his winter quarters while he besieged Philadelphia during the War of 1812.
In 1821, Joel Palmer purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Dumont from Nicholas Wright for $1 million dollars. Palmer built a small cabin on this land and named it Palmerstown after himself and his father Amos Palmer Sr.. In 1825, Anthony Wayne founded Wayne Township with part of Palmerstown as its nucleus. When Wayne Township was established, it included all of what is now Mercer County except for the portions that are now West Orange andEast Brunswick township municipalities.
On October 14, 1829, Morris Brown organized a farmers' meeting at Solon's Tavern in front of present-day West Orange High School to discuss ways to improve agricultural production in central New Jersey. At this meeting, Brown proposed creating a township based on suggestions made at the farmers' meeting earlier that year about improving farming methods and expanding opportunities for settlers in central New Jersey. This proposal was accepted by residents at a special election held two days later and started proceedings leading to incorporation as Morris Township on December 1.
