Beech was a Quaker and he founded the first school in Dumont. In 1824, John Stephenson built the first sawmill in Dumont and it became an important part of the community. The mill continued to be a major industry until 1954. In 1868, George Winton built a grocery store in Dumont and it is still active today. The store helped to fuel growth within the community and it has been around since then. In 1912, Hyrum Smith established a bakery called Hyrum’s bakery which still operates today. Smith was an important figure within the community and he donated many items to help build up Dumont over time. He also served as mayor for two terms from 1916-1918 and 1922-1924. In 1976, Linda DeVito opened her own business called Linda’s Italian Ice which continues to operate today. This business has been an important part of the community since 1972 and has helped contribute to its growth over time!

Dumont is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,717 at the 2010 census. Dumont was founded in 1795 and named for General Lafayette. The first post office in Dumont was established on December 12, 1803, and remained open until it closed on July 14, 1806. The town took its name from General Lafayette. In 1814, the town added the word "Montgomery" to its name to reflect the fact that Captain John Montgomery of the 7th Delaware Infantry had fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. Dumont became an incorporated municipality on November 3rd 1899. The borough of Montclair annexed Dumont on February 26th 1902 becoming one of only two municipalities in Monmouth County without initial annexation requests from other townships/villages). On October 15th 1905 Iron Bridge Road between Montclair and Dumont was completed as part of a state trunk road project which also included widening portions of Route 9 east of Garden City and extending Interstate 95 north to Promenade Avenue (now I-295) just east of Atlantic City. This provided a new connection between New York City to the south and Philadelphia to the north while bypassing Camden County altogether. On May 25th 1914 a small fire destroyed several businesses around downtown including Weehawken's Masonic Temple which served as both local landmark and community center until it was replaced by an all-steel building in 1984. A second devastating fire destroyed much business activity within blocks of First Baptist Church located on Main Street shortly after 6pm on September 2nd 1925 leaving over 100 buildings loss including many churches across Monmouth County completely gutted with few survivors remaining inside or outside those impacted structures overnight until morning rescue crews arrived hours later with heavy machinery able to salvage most or all contents with very little damage done exteriorly despite intense heat output typical for summertime fires in NJ during that time period; this event has been sometimes cited as one reason for elected officials throughout eastern NJ pushing for prohibition efforts during this era beginning in earnest following World War II

The town was originally called Rodenburgh, but changed its name to Dumont after Sir William Dumont, an Englishman who became a wealthy merchant and political figure in New Netherland. In 1764, Dumont Township was created from parts of Montville Township. In 1854, the township was renamed to Manchester Township in honor of Ulysses S. Grant. Dumont is located at (40.828655, -74.560947). It covers an area of , making it the second-most populous municipality in Mercer County after West Manchester Borough. As of the 2010 census, there were 16,722 people living in Dumont Township and 9,588 people residing in Manchester Township. The population density was 1,471 people per square mile (595/km²). There were 11,065 housing units at an average density of 624 per square mile (241/km²). The racial makeup of Dumont Township was 99% White and 0% African American. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 2% of the population. There are several heritage sites within Dumont township including: The Stroud House is a three-story house that dates back to 1802 on Main Street between Center Road and South Brunswick Avenue in central middle class neighborhood with white picket fences and large lawns along Wellesley Avenue near Rutgers University; it has been restored as part of a walking tour program for school groups led by Drury Park Historical Society volunteers since 1978; also onMain Street are two other houses from this period – one with two stories built about 1840s for James Fenton who ran one sawmill until he leased it to Isaac Latham Jr., founder of Jardine & Latham ice cream parlor on Broadwalk which opened in 1851; another three-story wood frame house built c1850–60 for John Stephenson who operated a gristmill located easton Road south side opposite his home; thenceforth known as Stephenson’s Store until 1956 when ownership passed from father to son John Jr.; one contributing building from this time period stands today at 5235 Maple Ave., Ste 720 off I-95 North exit ramp just west side Old Mill Rd./Route 10 outside Trenton; all three buildings have been preserved due to their unique architecture together with their adjoining lot which now includes a playground equipment store adjacent thereto bounded by Maple Ave., Old Mill Rd./Route 10WEST entrance ramp and Trenton city limits The Stroud House property is open daily 9am-4pm during daylight hours year round except Sundays when closed because services take place at Rutgers University across the street Manchester Village Hall is home to Haddon Heights United Methodist Church which served as both community center for Manchester village throughout much of its history before moving into current premises adjacent to Haddon Heights High School following a fire that destroyed most classes inside Methodist church on Spring Garden Rd between Germantown Pike and Route 78A while students were attending Spring Garden Elementary School A new gymnasium/auditorium opened on Elm Drive adjacent to present day Haddon Heights Middle School around 2002 which served as home court facility for local varsity high school basketball teams beginning with 2001–2002 season before being moved indoors following construction project associated with Schools District merger
