Dumont, New Jersey is a small town located in Essex County, New York. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first coffee roasting shop in Dumont opened in 1882 and it was run by Abram Demarest. In 1916, J.P.morgan founded his own coffee shop in Dumont and continued to roast coffee there until his death in 1961. The first Starbucks store opened up in Dumont on Bloomfield Avenue in 1986 and the current location on Elm Street is the third oldest Starbucks store open to the public. Dumont was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Dumont and his wife, Anne. The town became a manufacturing center for textiles and other products during the 19th century. In 1872, Dumont merged with neighboring towns of West Orange and East Orange to form the Borough of Paramus. The merger resulted in reductions in local government services, but it helped spur economic growth. Paramus became a bedroom community for New Jersey during the 1960s and 1970s. Since then, the borough has undergone several name changes, most notably Paramus Township (1965-2008) and South Paramus Township (2008-present). Today, Dumont is home to two high schools—Paramus Area Vocational School District #1 andParamus Technical High School—a post office, a library, a fire station, and several small businesses.
Dumont was founded by Nicholas Dumont in 1732. The town was named for Nicholas' father, Captain John Dumont. The first store in Dumont opened in 1742. In 1834, the township was erected and the first school was built. The present high school building opened in 1933. In 1898, the township became a borough; it reverted to a borough on May 15, 1959. On November 8 of that year, the Borough Council merged with two other townships to form Dumont-Warren Township.
