Dover, New Jersey is a town located in Kent County, New York on the Delaware River. The population of Dover was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Dover is one of the oldest towns in the United States and it has been home to an army for over 200 years. The first military deployment of troops to Dover took place on December 12, 1777 when French and Indian forces attacked British General John Burgoyne's forces at Saratoga Mountain. On December 15, 1777, Dover was founded as a village by Colonel George Washington and Captain James Kieft. The first permanent military installation in Dover was Fort Trimble which was built in 1795 on land that now forms part of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. In 1802-1803, Dover served as garrison town for Fort Niagara on the Canada-US border. During this time it also became the site of a largepox outbreak that killed more than 60% of the population in Kent County. In 1865, Dover became part of New York after statehood was granted to America. As part of this change in allegiance it lost its status as a village and reverted back to being an unincorporated community within Kent County with a population size smaller than 1,000 people. However, since 2000 there have been efforts to revive Dover's economy by creating new businesses based within its walls such as culinary arts and retail therapy services along with events like art shows and music festivals which attract residents from all over northern New York Valley area including Buffalo and Rochester

Dover, New Jersey is a borough in Kent County, New Jersey, United States. It was formed on February 27, 1911 from the merger of Dover Township and East Dover Township. In 1814, John Totten donated land to form what would become Dover Township. On November 10th of that year by act of the New Jersey Legislature, it was renamed East Dover Township after both its original townships had been abolished by an act of Congress two years earlier. On February 27th, 1911, as part of a larger reorganization of municipalities in Kent County following statehood, Dover became part of the newly created Borough of Kenton. The reason for this change is not fully understood but may have been due to political pressure from nearby Atlantic City which had just become incorporated as a city and was seeking to maintain its own separate government structure; however there is no evidence that this had any impact on actual development or behavior within the community before or after annexation into Kenton. Dover became an incident-free city on January 1, 2009 following the enactment of the Delaware River Agreement Amendments Act of 2008. The name "Dover" derives from the Anglo-Saxon word dóo (dun), meaning "a ford or crossing of a river". In 1664 Captain John Smith found two fords near Dover and named them after his home town of Dorchester in England – "Newport" would become the name given to both towns by their respective governments. In 1777 Captain George Washington founded what is now Dover as part of Hunterdon County when he reassembled the Continental Army after its departure from Philadelphia during Governor Thomas Jefferson's War for Independence. Lt Col Washington had originally served with General George Washington under MajorGeneral Nathanael Greene during that campaign and knew how to lead troops across streams without getting wet. From this first outpost at present-day Dover Sgt John Atterbury conducted raids into Canada while Commodore Hyatt sailed downriver below to harass British shipping off Kingston but all went well until On October 25th Capt Atterbury came across eight British warships anchored outside Quebec City with drums beaten out and flags flying - this was only the beginning of what would be called Beaver Wars between America's ally Great Britain and her former colony France which began in North America in 1755 with French explorer La Salle's expedition upriver to Fort Du Quesne on Lake Erie
