Dover, New Jersey is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,818 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest borough in Morris County and it has a total area of just under . Dover is located on the Delaware River between Philadelphia and Trenton. Dover was founded by English colonists in 1764 as an agricultural village called East Dover Township (now part of Camden). In 1814, Dover became part of Morristown Township when that township was created from portions of Warren and Union counties. As part of a merger of Essex and Middlesex counties in 1965, Dover became a Borough. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Dover in 1764; they were led by Captain John Smith. The first house built on the site was erected by Nicholas Montresor, who bought land from the Dutch West India Company for £1 million after reaching Philadelphia with his ship "Intrepid". The town's initial name may be derived from its location: east of where Newark Bridge stands today (then known as Hackensack), between the river and what would become Princeton University's campus to the south-west and west respectively. Dover began to grow rapidly during the American Revolution; it had 5 residents when British forces burned down East Dover Village on July 4th, 1776. By 1800 there were over 100 residents living within limits prescribed by John Denny for himself as well as for two other townships - North Eggersfield Township to the north-east and Southwick Township to the south-west - which he had created around Newtown Creek just upstream from downtownPhiladelphia. On October 15th 1802, following an act passed by Congress entitled "An Act to establish boundaries between Pennsylvania and New York", all but 2 miles (3 km) along both banks of Delaware River were annexed into Pennsylvania while still subject to Virginia jurisdiction; this left only about 3 miles (5 km) between Dover proper and Lower Delaware Bayou which formed Delaware Lake & Park at present day Olde Towne Park across Prince George's County line & beyond Upper Delaware Bayou near Smyrna Beach (& Cumberland County border). This boundary change effectively eliminated any possibility that Upper Delaware Bayou could be used politically or economically as a water source for Newark/Morristown/Camden while also leaving much undeveloped waterfront land extending into northern Passaic County - much like lower Manhattan Today! Captain John Smith's heirs continued farming their land until 1814 when they sold it all off except one acreage southeast of present day Park Street opposite Belle Isle Ferry Landing onto which they built their first home - White Horse Farmstead #2 - now known as Brunswick House Museum although most likely built before 1800 due missing foundations! William Nicholson who succeeded him developed White Horse Farmstead into one of America's largest taverns/restaurants with facilities that included indoor swimming pool/hot tubs & gardens dating back to c1790! This prosperity helped spur development adjacent to present day Main Street including some large warehouses used today such as Imeris Paper Products warehouse C&H Fabrics store Wawa Food Mart building National Leatherworking Supply Warehouse PHILLIPS ELECTRONICS building later renamed Foxwoods Casino theme park just north side current parking lot across road from old train depot) making possible social mixing among different ethnic groups essential for early industrial success! In 1857 Daniel Defoe moved permanently from London so he could live closer to family then travelling long distances via boat upriver each week eager finallyto see fresh air rather than mosquitoes!) His grandson Daniel Defoe would eventually write one hundred books including Robinson Crusoe making him one of history’s most famous authors Although many people erroneously think his grandson actually wrote Jaws!, Cutthroat Island etc.) From these modest beginnings small enough yet harboring ambitions above those limited by geography – Portsmouth quickly grew into one of America’s most thriving cities – setting standards far surpassed anywhere else until recently…..Today more than 20% OF THE POPULATION OF MORRIS COUNTY LIVE IN DOVER! While challenges remain significant such as overflowing reservoirs resulting in environmental damage caused by seagull nesting nestings on high water levels particularly near beaches – especially during summer months – overall trends are positive showing increasing development potential despite some major challenges……….The growth rate graph below clearly indicates how difficult but not impossible it can be for even small towns like oursto keep up with larger municipalities…..It should be noted that we have made great strides since 2000 despite some negative developments……….One example is our successful effort led by Mayor Bob Menendez to secure funding through Community Development Block Grant programs available through NJ Transit designed specificallyfor rural communities like ours!) Dover is located on the Delaware River and is part of the Philadelphia–Wilmington– Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name “Dover†first appeared in a deed recorded in 1664 by Nicholas Howe. It derived from Old English "dovera" meaning place of crossing or ferry landing (the river's current name), and "burh" meaning fortification or stronghold. Dover was incorporated as a borough on April 15, 1868, from portions of Hackensack and Rahway Townships. In 2001, Dover became one of five towns to be merged into the newly created Camden County government under Governor Christie. This area now includes all of what is now Middlesex County as well as parts of Sussex and Union Counties along the Delaware River shoreline east of Route 1A/US 6A/PA 46 for which they named themselves after their home villages - Schuylkill Haven on the south side of the river where they resided until 1701 when they moved northward along I-95 adjacent to modern day Camden Township; Eastonburgh on Long Beach Creek where they had been living since 1702; Northumberland Point near present day Borough Heights; Westville Harbor across Glassport Creek from Pennsville; Willingboro Landing on tidal creek opposite Ship Tavern which served as Port Royal during French colonial times; The Point Pleasant Plantation extending inland into Mercer Township including most notably Monmouth Junction where William Penn founded Pennsylvania Colony in 1681 despite being advised by his father not to do so due to Native American opposition - finally Egg Harbor Township on eastern tip of present day Brunswick Peninsula between Passaic Bayou & Sunnyside Lake within today'sellenwood Borough borders In 1868, Dover was one of five towns merged into Camden County government under Governor Christie following passage by state referendum resulting from consolidation efforts among several municipalities that were struggling economically during this time period including Rahway Townships (northwest corner); Hackensack Townships (central portion); Plattsburgh Borough (southwest corner); Glassport Borough (east end); Willingboro Landing Borough across glassport creek opposite Ship Tavern which served as Port Royal during French colonial times - forming what would become known as Camden County Today! With its population close to 100% white AngloSaxon Protestants – although some African Americans also lived here through various waves throughout history - it quickly became an agricultural center with large cotton plantations such as those owned by James Phelan and Abraham DeWitt Jr., two deputy governors during George Washington's presidency who also served as mayors of Trenton & Princeton respectively during this time period! For many years it functioned more like a small town than an urban center with its own school board and city hall while residents continued to rely primarily upon trade connections with Philadelphia & Wilmington for daily necessities such as groceries, clothing etc.. However starting around 1960s when Interstate 95 replaced old US 1A/US 6A routing through northeastern NJ these ties began to unravel further leaving Dover increasingly isolated both physically & functionally from its larger neighborings... Today however things are slowly beginning to change again with increased development nearby including new housing developments such as Greenbelt Village situated just east off I-295 next door to Route 914 leading north towards Center City Philly while formerly rural areas surrounding town have seen significant growth over recent decades enabling much needed mixed use redevelopment taking place within walking distance including Medford Park located just northwest off I-95 next door to Palisades Mall accessible via Broad Street Extension leading northeast towards Sandy Hook Elementary School (& significantly expanding retail options currently available within minutes walkable proximity)...
