The town is located on the southern edge of the township of Newton and is bordered by Union Township to the east, Clinton Township to the south, Glassboro Township to the west and north, and Ardsley Borough to the northwest. At that time Collingwood consisted of only a few dirt homes and fields with some trees. In 1797, Mr. Bevan erected a mill on what is now Main Street which became an important center for commerce in this part of Middlesex County due to its location near water sources galore. Many shops and mills were built along Main Street throughout the 19th century until it became an expressway in 1922 when NJ Route 66 was built through eastern Middlesex County connecting Newark Liberty International Airport with Allentown and other points southward. By 1840 Collingwood had 5 stores, 7 blacksmiths ( smiths ), 2 churches ( Methodists & Baptists), 1 schoolhouse & 3 gristmills; however during most of this time there was no real industry or trade because transportation between Newton and these settlements was difficult & expensive using horses or wagons thru dense forest cover which still exists today beyond Ardsley Roadstead In 1851 General James Kieft established a military post here named Fort Kieft situated on high ground overlooking present day Edison National Laboratory across Edison Creek just west of Collingwood village limits on Livingston Mountain north of I-95 ( present day Weehawken Blvd.). The area now known as Collingswood was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1678 and named "Wijk aan Zee" after the Wijk River which ran through it. The first post office in Collingswood was established on July 10, 1814. In 1856, the village became a borough when it merged with nearbyhackensack to form the new municipality of Newark. On March 15, 1957, Collingswood annexed portions of Hackensack Township to form an even larger municipality also called Newark-on-the-Lake. In 1911 Collingwood's population passed its peak with 14 people living in 8 houses; however during World War I (1914-18), many family members served in The American Infantry Regiment (2nd NJ) stationed at Camp Woodrow Wilson near Passaic Junction and made their homes here until returning home in 1918 or later During World War II residents increased to over 100 due to military enlistment and mobilization throughout New Jersey Today there are just under 11 thousand residents within the township limits while another 2 thousand citizens live in unincorporated areas around Collingwood including Hackensack and Caldwell counties bordering Newark collingswoods history begins with early settler Pieter de Hooge who arrived here from Amersfoort on October 22nd 1678 with his wife Anna Maria van der Valk De Hooge soon founded a farmstead consisting of 581 acres located east of what is nowCollingwood Avenue This farmstead would eventually grow to include 1,500 acres (6 km²) that still constitutes collingwoods core today . Many other families followed suit over time such as Cornelis den Heuvel who purchased 500 acres east of what is now Rte 202 for $4 per acre (1/2 bushel/acre) – this land would become known as den Heuvel’s Forest Reserve . Over time more farms were acquired totaling 476 acres by 1802 . A map dated January 1st 1803 shows 26 farms withinCollingwood boundaries making it quite probable that prior to this date most CollingWOOD lands lay undisturbed save for some slight adjustments . Also noteable landowners west or south of Rte 202 during this time period included Nicholas Latham who acquired 640 acres along Water Street between Bound Brook Avenue & Bordentown Road becoming one of collingwoods earliest landowners This acquisition would result in much controversy as many felt that Latham had taken advantage cf government assistance which at that point was very limited following the Revolutionary War However subsequent investigations showed otherwise and today Latham enjoys significant recognition for his donation – he remains listed on our registers as “NICHOLAS LAATHSMITH”assuming you include all zoned properties not associated directly wit h him suchas den Heuvel’s Forest Reserve & Water Street lots Although initially rural setting agricultural life continued relatively unchanged until well into late 19th century when surface water levels began receding slowly but surely leaving open spaces within township boundaries more accessible then they once were ; herein lies muchcollingswomans hard work & dedication over those many years culminating ultimatelyintoday’s shopping malls., etc .)
