Collingswood is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. Collingswood is located on the southern border of Middlesex County and is bordered by Elizabeth Township to the north, Newark Bay to the east, and Perth Amboy Township to the south. It has a total area of 3 square miles (8 km²). The first settlers in what is now Collingswood were farmers who came from nearby Camden in 1795. The community was named for General James Collingwood who fought in the American Revolution as a colonel and later served as Governor of New Jersey. In 1814, whenNJ became a state, Collingwood was incorporated as a borough. In 1868, it merged with Elizabeth Township to form one municipality. In 1915-16, Collingswood had its first public school which served students from all three townships within its boundaries: Elizabethtown (to the east), Newark Bay (to the west), and Perth Amboy Township (to the south). That same year also saw construction of what is now Sumner Park Recreation Area which still serves students today. During World War II many collingswoods residents worked in local factories that produced munitions such as B-24 Liberator bombers or V-2 missiles used by Nazi Germany during World War II. Collingswood was a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. It was located on the north bank of the Raritan River. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1782 by General George Washington and his troops as a stop on their way to victory over British forces at Saratoga. Collingswood's name may be derived from colling wood, a type of maple that is common in the area. The first store opened in 1785 and the first post office opened in 1786. In 1814, Collingswood became part of Union Township when it was formed from parts of Middlesex and Union counties. In 1846, it became part of Paterson Township when that township was created from portions of Middlesex and Union counties. In 1865, it became part of Parsippany Borough when that borough was established from portions of Parsippany and Paterson townships. In 1970, Collingswood merged with its neighborless neighboring borough, Parsippany Township (renamed Garden City), forming one municipality with a population exceeding 2,000 residents for the first time in New Jersey history. It remains one municipality today despite having less land area than either Garden City or Parsippany Borough did at their respective founding dates - due to amalgamation buffs among residents who lobbied for such an event during those years!
