Collingswood is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,028 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. Collingswood was formed on March 4, 1874 from portions of South Brunswick Township and Ocean County. The name "Collingswood" comes from an Indian word meaning "a place where maple trees grow." The first European settlers in what is now Collingswood were Dutchmen who arrived in 1664. They built a small farmstead around what is now Old Bridge Road and named it Wichelmanuschtegaal after their captain Hendrik Wichelmanus (1624-1686). In 1701, Colonel John Montresor purchased land at the mouth of the Hackensack River from Indians for $20 per acre. Montresor named his purchase collingwood because of its many maple trees. In 1814, when Bergen County was created, parts of South Brunswick Township and Ocean County were added to it. On March 4, 1874, this entire township became collingwood when it was organized as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature pursuant to an act granting municipal rights to townships that had been annexed into other counties during the late 19th century. Prior to incorporation as a borough, Collingswood had a combined population of 1,844 and consisted mainly of small farmers and their families living near Route 9 between Vineland and Bricktown Roads; along with workers at various mills located in Bricktown and nearby Nutleyville . In 1896-97 there were 1128 residents in all six wards which made up collingwoods then sizerestricted town limits; but with annexations by Pleasant Valley (1910), Neptune City (1915), Verona (1920), West Orange (1925) Andover Heights Borough followed suit until 1941 when both those municipalities became full fledged cities status within Bergen County while still retaining some vestige or rural character within their borders which continues today as the only specific rural character remaining among all six wards comprising collingwoods current borough form

The township was originally called "Rahway," but changed to "Collingwood" on October 27, 1854 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature after the death of Colonel John Collingwood. The first post office at Collingwood opened on July 1, 1840. It was renamed again to "South Orange Township" on January 12, 1885 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature following the merger of South Orange and Rahway townships into Middlesex County. According to the United States Census Bureau,Collingwood has a total area of , all land. As of the census prior to 2010, there were 5,811 people residing in Collingswood Borough; 1,711 households and 910 families residing within collings wood township; and 372 housing units comprising 3% or fewer of all borough's population living in apartment buildings or other types of detached dwellings according to Census data as well as 1% or fewer school children attending public schools located within collings wood boroughship
