Clifton is a small town in New Jersey, United States. It is located on the border of Middlesex County and Burlington County. The population was 5,808 at the 2010 census. Clifton was named after Colonel John Clift (1784-1873), an American lawyer and politician who served as a justice of the peace in Middlesex County from 1828 to 1830 and as a member of the New Jersey Senate from 1839 to 1843. Located along NJ Route 46 just north of Elizabethtown, Clifton has been noted for its dairy products and agricultural produce since colonial times. In 1779, Colonel John Clift erected a farmstead here which became known as "Clift's Corner" because it lay on the junction of two major roads in what is now Middlesex County. A post office was established at Clift's Corner in 1811, and remained in operation until 1865. The first settlers in what is now Clarendon Township arrived around 1800; they were farmers or traders who traded with Native Americans near present-day Princeton Junction. The first European settler in what is now Clarendon Township was Nicholas Ladd (died 1798). He built a log cabin on his property where he made his home until his death five years later.Ladd's heirs sold their holdings to David Robertson (died 1799) and James Hunter (died 1800). From these initial settlers came many more over time, including Abel Johnson (baptized December 12th, 1795 – died October 16th, 1840), one of only two men ever convicted by an English court for treason against Great Britain – he had plotted to assassinate then British Prime Minister George Washington during the War of 1812 . In 1903, he donated land to build the Clifton High School which opened in 1906. During World War II, Clifton was home to the United States Steel Corp., one of the largest steel manufacturing companies in America. It produced munitions including tanks and planes that helped win the war. After the war ended, many of these factories closed down but some continued operations until they were closed by Japanese forces during World War II again; they reopened after the war as American Motors Corporation (AMD). Clifton is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Clifton was founded in 1764 by Colonel Jameson and his family. The first European to sight the area now known as Clifton was Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 10, 1524 while sailing from Spain to North America. In 1764, Colonel Jameson's brother-in-law and namesake of the town developed a 160 acre (50 ha) tract of land east of what is now Livingston Avenue in what is now Clifton Township. It became part of Monmouth County on February 3, 1814.
