The first military deployments in Clifton were during World War I. The town was named for Colonel George Clifton, who donated the land for a military cemetery. The first American troops to deploy in Clifton were soldiers from New Jersey Regiment of Infantry on December 14, 1917. They served in the war as part of the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, XVIII Corps. In 1924, General John Pershing ordered an additional battalion of United States Marines to be stationed at Camp Pendleton Naval Base in Clifton. This unit became known as Marine Barracks #2 and served until 1957 when it was closed down and its assets sold off to other organizations. Since World War II there have been numerous deployments by both the U.S. Army and Marine Corps with units garrisoning various locations around the world including Fort Polk Thailand; Okinawa Japan; Bahrain Qatar; Kuwait Iraq; Djibouti Somalia; Afghanistan; CENTCOM Tampa Florida) The latest deployment announced by the New Jersey State Police is that they will be deploying an armored vehicle squadron toadditional barracks at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware next year
Clifton, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 27,594 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Middlesex County and borders Newark to the south and Hackensack to the north. Clifton was first settled by English colonists in 1682.

Clifton, New Jersey is a small town located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,421 at the 2010 census. Clifton was founded in 1792 by Captain Nathan Clifford and his wife Anne as a farmstead on the tidal island of Long Island (now part of Jersey City). It became an incorporated borough in 1858. In 1915, it merged with nearby Neptune Township to form Monmouth Borough. The borough was dissolved in 1963 and its assets were divided among the two townships. The name of Clifton is thought to be derived from two early settlers, Captains Nathan Clifford and Job Colescliff who each landed on Long Island on separate occasions in 1792. According to one account: "Nathan Clifford came over from British America; Job Colescliff came over from Ireland." The first settler's home was at what is now known as Cornwallis Avenue and they built an old frame house there which still stands today. When the area around Clifton became more developed, they moved their homes to what is now West Side Avenue near present-day Neptune Avenue. In 1858, when Monmouth Borough was formed by merging adjacent villages including Neptune Township (set aside for women) with sections ofOcean Grove (then part of Ocean Township), Captain Jameson erected a sawmill along the navigable river shoreline just east of town limits making him one of only two men then living permanently within township boundaries... In 1915 Lindenquist Bridge opened connecting mainland NJ with Staten IslandGMail service also commenced from this point providing transportation for families commuting between both boroughs...this bridge provided access not only for residents residing within either municipality but also businesses situated on both sides ofriver." The move toward suburbanization process may have started even earlier as evidence exists that General Eleazer Parsons had leased land northeast of town limits back in 1847 for 2 miles wide and 3 rods deep extending northeasterly to meet Atlantic River at Point Breeze where he intended to build a canal linking Newark Bay with Atlantic Ocean" This plan never fully materialized due to financial difficulties however it does suggest that there were plans underway years before consolidation occurred. There were several other developments throughout these years such as construction of Idlewild Road which connected downtown Monmouth Junction with Blossom Hill Cemetery about a mile away via horse-drawn carriage services until 1940 when buses began serving all residents including those living outside township borders
Clifton was founded by the Cliftons in 1781. The town was named for Colonel Jonathan Clift, who donated the land for it. It began as a small farm community and grew rapidly after the construction of the Erie Canal in 1825. In 1854, Clifton became part of Jersey City and remained that way until 1959 when it became a part of New York City.
