Clifton, New Jersey is a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1795 and has been the county seat of Monmouth County since 1836. The first Europeans to visit Clifton were French traders and travelers who passed through on their way from Philadelphia to Hackensack in 1664. The area that would become Clifton was first settled by Dutch farmers in the early 17th century. In 1795, a group of Englishmen traveled through Monmouth County on their way to Williamsburg and found land for themselves here. They named their new settlement after the village in England where they had originated. The community's growth continued until 1836 when it was taken over by the Township of West Egg along with neighboring townships of East Egg and South Orange. As township boundaries changed over time, so did its population; however, Clifton always remained as the largest municipality within its original boundaries. In 1962, when Monmouth County became part of New Jersey City due to increased suburban development within the state, Clifton experienced a rapid expansion; this included the construction of several shopping malls and office buildings which have now largely disappeared except for a few remnant commercial parcels across town center which still house some businesses today (e.g., Sunoco Supermarkets). Clifton is a small borough located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 3,541. Its ZIP code is 07012. The name Clifton was derived from "hills" and "clinton" (a farmstead). The first settler in Clifton was Nicholas Clinton who arrived in 1764. In 1815, when Monmouth County was created, Clifton became part of it and its ZIP code remained unchanged until 1975. In 1814, Nicholas Clinton set up a tannery on the corner of Church and Market Streets in what is now Clifton. He named his tannery Clinton Tannery after President James K. Polk's brother-in-law Senator John Quincy Adams (D-MA). The tannery continued to be run by Clintons until it closed in 1875. In that year, it merged with another tannery to form theClinton Tanning Company which still operates today as a subsidiary of American Tanning Corporation.
