Army gift history in Clifton, New Jersey goes back to the Revolutionary War. The Clifton Regiment was raised in 1779 and fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. In 1812, the regiment joined General Andrew Jackson's army as part of his Tennessee campaign. At the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, on October 16, 1812, the unit suffered a severe defeat. In 1862, Colonel George Armstrong Custer's 4th Infantry battalion arrived in Clifton from Utica Heights and became part of the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Brigade under General Robert E. Lee. during this time period many military items were given away as gifts to civilians (e.g., clothing and firearms). TheClifton Legionnaires were also raised in 1892-1893 and served with distinction during World War I (1914-1918) as part of the 2nd Battalion (Territorial Army) 5th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Volunteers which was then redesignated as 116th Infantry Regiment on November 10, 1918 when it became an all volunteer regiment constituted under National Defense Act § 241(a)(2)). The Clifton Army Depot was founded in 1916 and became one of the leading army supply depots in the United States.Clifton was also known for its production of camouflage uniforms, which were used by the American military during World War II. The depot closed in 1990, but it is now open to the public as a museum.
Clifton is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 21,714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Newark, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clifton was founded in 1788 by English colonists as an agricultural village on the Raritan River. In 1814, it became part of Princeton Township. On March 14, 1881, Clifton and eight other towns located in Middlesex and Union Counties merged to form the new township of Princeton. The first settler in Clifton was John Crouch who arrived there in 1788 with his family from Somerset County, England. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it after himself and his son Christopher Crouch (1784-1851). John's grandson Samuel Crouch (1801-1865) settled there about 1814; he also named the street after him which still bears his name today: Crouch Boulevard. In 1814, when Princeton Township was formed from parts of Middlesex and Union Counties, it included most of what is now Clifton as well as portions of Hackensack and Rahway Townships north of Newark Bay. As a result of this merger, many early settlers were forced to leave their homes behind when they moved into new townships or counties - some went so far as to abandon their crops entirely and return home only weeks later to find that their land had been taken over by others! Thus began one of history's great Birthdays Quotations - "On March 14th [1881], eight miles south-west of Trenton,[Clifton] merged with seven other villages forming Princeton Township." This event helped solidify Clifton's place among America's largest commercial cities during the 19th century - its growth paralleled that not only of Philadelphia but also New York City and Chicago! 2 through 10 Downing Street

Clifton was a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,075 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Trenton-Ewing, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clifton's history dates back to 1771 when two brothers named Samuel and David Clift founded a farm on land that now includes much of what is today Clifton Township. It wasn't until 1802 that the township was formed from portions of three other townships: East Orange (formed in 1798), West Orange (1805) and South Orange (1812). The first settler in Clifton Township was John McNamara who arrived in 1771. He built a cabin on his farm which he named "Newmarket". In 1802, John McNamara's brother James bought the farm from him and renamed it "Clifton" after himself and his wife Catherine. In 1814, Nicholas Bair purchased some of John McNamara's land including what is now Clifton Township from him for $4 beating down any trees or roots that may have been blocking the road leading to his property. This purchase made Bair one of the earliest settlers in Clifton Township. Bair had a sawmill built on the creek that flows through Clifton into Rahway Lake where he converted it into a gristmill which produced flour for local markets as well as for export to England. In 1825, Anthony D'Angelo sold 160 acres (60 hectares) located west of present-day Clifton to Abraham Hagedorn for $2幣 per acre ($160/hectare). This allowed Hagedorn to build an extensive farming estate called "Hagerstown" which included multiple buildings such as a millinery shop, blacksmith shop and barns plus miles of roads and fields suitable for agriculture with abundant water resources. Hagerstown eventually developed into one of Hunterdon County’s largest villages with over 1,000 residents by 1830. However, during America’s Great Awakening period (1790–1800), many new churches were constructed throughout New Jersey due to religious excitement caused by Enlightenment philosophes like Jean Jacques Rousseau who argued against traditional beliefs about predestination and election etc., calling instead for social responsibility among humans rather than relying on Providence or fate within God's plan ordained by Him alone! As political unrest increased throughout North America during this time period culminating in American Civil War era (1861–1865), many farmers turned their attention towards crops production rather than their homes providing support for families; however, despite this change few farms became abandoned due to lack of available labor or natural disaster such as floods or crop failures etc.. In 1865 Anthony D’Angelo sold his remaining interest in Hagerstown Estate back to Abraham Hagedorn who continued farming there until 1902 when he gave up all claims theretoidexcepting lands adjacent to Rahway Lake where he built an elaborate summer home still extant today known as “D'Angelo Mansion” . In 1902 Isaac Selwyn purchased 100 acres (40 hectares) adjoining D'Angelo Mansion from Abraham Hagedorn making it permanently clfittonian ; thus becoming one side effect of Anthony D' Angelo's experimentations regarding racial equality ! Clifton was founded in 1795 by Captain James Clifton and his family. The village grew rapidly due to the fact that it was on the route of major transportation arteries such as the PATCO Railroad, and became an important community for shipping and manufacturing. In 1847, the first post office was established in Clifton. The village reached its peak during World War II when it had a population of over 1,000 people. However, due to economic difficulties and the war, Clifton slowly declined over the years. Today, most of the buildings from Clifton's heyday have been replaced by newer structures or are no longer active.
