On Dec. 5, 1944, the United States Air Force awarded its first gift to Clifton residents when it bestowed upon the community a Messerschmitt-Komet fighter aircraft. The plane was donated by Adolf Messerschmidt and his son Friedrich in memory of their father's contributions within the air force.
Clifton is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Clifton is situated on the border of Mercer and Essex counties. The town was founded in 1795 by George Washington as a farming community on the east side of Monmouth Lake. It grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including coal and oil shale reserves which were used for powering local mills and factories. The railroad arrived in 1836 and allowed for more rapid development of the town, which became an important center for production throughout New Jersey. In 1915, Clifton was named one of the United States' "Towns That Will Survive" by then-Mayor Fiorello La Guardia because it had responded effectively to economic depression caused by World War I and World War II. Today, Clifton remains an important community with strong ties to its history and economy. Its businesses include four banks, two grocery stores, two automotive repair shops, five restaurants/cafés, three beauty salons/spas and two churches/temples. There are also several dozen residential buildings dating back to the early 1800s that are still in use today.

Here are a few examples from throughout their history: - In 1941, General Dwight Eisenhower presented test pilot Major Roger Baldwin with an operational P-39 Warhawk aircraft as a token of gratitude for his invaluable contributions to Allied air power during World War II. - In 1947, Lieutenant Colonel John Fritchey was given an Aeronca Cessna 200 for his excellent work in developing jet aviation. - In 1959, General Curtis LeMay presented Corporal Floyd Larkin with a North American T-6 Texan fighter aircraft as part of his gift to Air Combat Command (ACC). - In 1971, Flight Commander Gary Anthony received delivery of two Bell UH1 Hueys as part of his unit’s Christmas present. In all, the USAF has donated over 20 different types of airplanes and helicopters between 1941 and 1971! It is clear that the USAF takes great pride in its gifted members and their incredible achievements in aviation.

Clifton is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Clifton was founded by English settlers in 1760. It became an incorporated municipality on July 1, 1881. The first permanent settler in Clifton was Nicholas Applegate, who arrived in 1760 from England and erected a small cabin near present-day Main Street and the river's edge. The first stores were established soon after by local traders with access to water power available from nearby reservoirs. By 1800, the village had 10 houses and two businesses: one store operated as a millinery and dyeing house; the other served as a post office and schoolhouse until 1868. In 1814, John J. Vanderbilth developed what is now Westcliff Road into what would become Clifton Township with land grant from George Washington that covered . He built his home on what is now State Avenue (later called First Street). Vanderbilth probably named it for himself—he had earlier been granted lands including this parcel of land by King George III on October 12, 1785 (). In 1830, Judge John Pemberton laid out part of modern-day North Brunswick on four acres grant from Peter Cooper which included much of today's clifton township boundary line north of Interstate 95 (the old alignment of I-95). This area became known as "Pembertonsville." When pioneers arrived in this area early 1800s they found fields full of corn but little else besides swampy ground for hunting or farming; over time farmers cleared away more swampy areas and began growing wheat, oats, barley and other crops that becameCliftons mainstay economy through most of the 19th centuryuntil mills replaced agriculture as primary economic activity during the 20th century. In addition to its agricultural base during most of its history Clifton also produced lumber until the late 1920s when mills closed down due to changes brought about by World War II along with falling prices for wood products overall because aluminum production increased sharply postwar while lumber prices stabilized A sign that things are changing again can be seen in recent years as many people are moving back into town after leaving rural areas during economic recession caused by global warming/climate change policies pursued nationally/internationally
