The Marine Corps has been deployed in many different places around the world. In Cliffside Park, New Jersey, Marines have been deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The Marines also play an important role in the United States military by providing security and defense to our nation. The history of the Marines in Cliffside Park began with World War I when American marines served in Europe as part of the Allied Expeditionary Force. After World War I, America’s military was split into two camps- those who wanted to keep America’s involvement in wars overseas and those who wanted out of them. As time went on, both groups became more divided. Those who wanted to stay involved with war started to form militias called “draft dodgers” which were not authorized to fight because they were not citizens or had no combat experience. These militias disbanded after a few years but their spirit lives on through today’s marines stationed here at Cliffside Park (and throughout America). In 1934, Congress passed the National Defense Act which provided for the enlistment of marine reservists for service during any future conflict within the United States. This act set off a chain reaction that would lead to Marine deployment all over America- from Puerto Rico through California and Nevada to Maine, New York City and Texas. By 1941, marines had Deployed Coast Guard units along every US coastline as well as ground forces across six countries including Puerto Rico and Guam where they participated in fights against Japanese forces during World War II (1942-1945). During this time period there were also significant changes taking place within both the Marine Corps and society at large- women made their first Attempt at joining male units while men transitioned from being primarily Combat Engineers/Navy Reservists into fulltime soldiers becoming known as “Marines officer candidates” or MOCs (majors only). With so much change going on within American society during World War II, it is no wonder that marines have played such an important role ever since they arrived in America from abroad. Today there are nearly 2 million active duty marines serving worldwide with another 1 million reserves enrolled nationwide; making them one of the most ready armies on earth should hostilities arise again anywhere on Earth! When asked about their reason for being a marine, almost everyone has a story about why they choose this branch of service- whether it be Duty beyond compare or simply wanting some peace and quiet away from home life (Although spending too much time online can definitely take its toll!).
