The first naval ship in Carteret was HMS Victory, which arrived in 1797. The city was named after Admiral George Washington’s flagship, HMS Victory. The USS Constitution followed in 1814 and USS Monitor in 1845. Theodore Roosevelt dedicated USS Maine (BB-36) to the navy on May 12, 1941. On December 7, 1941, Japan launched an attack on Pearl Harbor resulting in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This event is often considered the beginning of World War II. On November 6, 1945, President Harry Truman presented Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz with a gift certificate for $25,000 for his donation ofUSS Enterprise (CV-6) to the navy museum at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. The Enterprise was decommissioned on October 15th 1947 and she became derelict until she was sold to Japanese buyers who renamed her “Aoba Maru” on February 21st 1955 and towed back into US waters under tow to become part of the National Museum of American Naval History collection at Norfolk Virginia.. In 1963 Commodore John F Kennedy gave USS Constitution Museum Director Rear Admiral Lewis Licklider a gift basket full of items from his personal collection including three uniforms worn by JFK during his service as Commander boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class aboard Constitution while he served as Mayor of New York City from 1961 thru 1966.. In 1987 Congress authorized designating April 14th each year as `National Day of Honor' for all United States Naval personnel who have rendered distinguished service during wartime or peacetime.. On that date it was announced that Vice President Dan Quayle would receive a retired Gaylord Perry class submarine from moored at Naval Station Pensacola Florida called “Chester Aiken” this marks the first time a sitting Vice President has received such an honor from within our military services since Harry Truman

The USS Carteret (DD-446) was a World War II destroyer that served in the United States Navy. She was laid down on 7 December 1944 by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Quincy, Massachusetts; launched on 18 January 1945; and commissioned into the navy on 21 May 1945. She served with distinction during the war and was awarded two battle stars and five campaign medals. After the war she decommissioned on 15 October 1946 at Norfolk, Virginia; struck from the navy list on 6 November 1946; and sold to A. L. Smith & Sons of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1 July 1947.

Carteret was founded by English colonists in 1664 as Castleton on the east coast of Long Island. The name Carteret comes from John Carteret, III (1624–1696), one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and firstGovernor of Rhode Island. He served under George Washington during the American Revolution and later became an ancestor to U.S. Ambassador to France John Fenton Carteret Jr.. In 1839, Carteret's post office was renamed after Commodore John Cushingstall Ransom, who commanded HM Ships "HMS Intrepid" and "HMS Hotspur". During World War II, many industries were located in or around Carteret including shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing and banana production. Today few if any businesses remain except for some agricultural acreage which continues to produce bananas

Carteret, New Jersey is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Mercer County and is the county seat of Mercer. The name Carteret comes from John Carteret who settled there in 1664. He was an Englishman and investor who helped found what is now known as Trenton with his brother-in-law Sir William Penn. The first permanent settler in Carteret was Nicholas Easton, who arrived in 1702. In 1724, John Beekman built a mill on the present site of South Street and West Road. In 1786, James Caldwell bought land near present-day North Avenue and Academy Street for development into a township; he named it Carteret Township after himself and his own home village of Earls Court (now Yardley). On February 6, 1814, Carteret Township became a part of the new Morris County when it was created from portions of Burlington Township. In 1868, carteaux were driven around the town to promote cotton production; these advertisements stillexist today on street corners throughout the town. By 1888, all but two houses had been replaced with frame buildings that would later become known as "the old brick buildings". That year also saw construction begin on what is now called "The Northern Lights" hotel which opened on Main Street in 1898 - one of only two hotels remaining standing in downtown Carteret after World War II destroyed most other structures within its boundaries. From 1915 until 1978,Carteret functioned as the home of the Morris County Courthouse before moving to Newark to be used by that city's government until 1987 when it moved back to Morristown under then Gov. Christie's administration as part of a larger effort to move statewide courthouse capacity up from Newark so that more conveniently located courts could be housed closer to major population centers across New Jersey without sacrificing public access to those courthouses or compromising their appearance or quality while they were being used by other governmental entities inside Newark Castle Park - an effort which ultimately failed due primarily to budget constraints caused by overall state government spending reductions during this time period resulting from wide-ranging economic recessionary conditions throughout much of New Jersey at that point including significant joblessness among both private citizens and government employees alike along with little impact upon courthouse operations or visitor traffic since then despite repeated efforts over subsequent years by various local officials including current Mayor Jeff Neumann whose office sits atop Castle Park overlooking downtown Carpeterte while also directly across Third Street corridor linking downtown Newark with Second Row Park adjacent thereto providing much needed parkland eastward along Third Street between Second Row Park and neighboring Rutgers University Center for Business Administrationformerly known as Borough Hall prior to its rebranding following implementation of Mayor Jeff Neumann's initiative prior to taking office
Cartaeret is a hamlet in the township of Carteret and the former county seat of Monmouth County, New Jersey. As of 2019, it had a population of 586. The first permanent European presence in Carteret was by French colonists who arrived in 1664, who named the place "L'Isle Rouge" after their flagship ship, La Belle Riviere. The original land grant for Carteret was on what is now the eastern side of Monmouth County. In 1714, Governor Jameson granted an additional piece of land to Colonel Nicholas Douglass on what is now the western side of Carteret Township. In 1743, Colonel John Armstrong landed on Long Island with his army and destroyed all the Native American settlements there before moving westward into present-day West Jersey. He named one of his townships Armstrongstown after this event. In 1828, Captain Robert Haines (1796-1868) founded a postal service between Camden and Manhattan Beach which became known as Haines's Ferry. This ferry transported passengers and cargo across Monmouth Bay from Atlantic City to Newark Liberty International Airport for about $1 each way when it operated daily from 1828 until 1984. In 1878, journalist Edward Gibbon White developed “The Daily News” paper at 6th & Market Streets in downtown Camden while working as an editor at The Philadelphia Press Company’s Philadelphia office; he sold The Daily News to George Hearst Jr., son of William Randolph Hearst in 1899 for $2 million cash ($ when measured against current market value).
