In 1814, General Gouverneur Morris used this location as his headquarters on the Delaware River during the War of 1812. The Guardsmen have served in all wars since 1775 and have frequently been called upon to participate in peacekeeping efforts. The first known national guard unit was raised on October 15, 1775, by George Washington as a militia to support him during the war against France. The first contingent of 1,500 Guardsmen arrived at Yorktown on September 19, 1781. For many years after Confederation, the National Guard was responsible for garrisoning federal buildings across the nation. In 1881, however, Congress passed a bill authorizing establishment of state militias to supplement the existing National Guard units. This change raised concerns among some Northeasterners about state control over what would happen if a large force of New England Guardsmen were called up for service outside of their boundaries. As a result of this legislation, Governor Anson Phelps requested permission from President James K. Polk to raise 3 companies (five Marines) from Massachusetts Bay Territory (now Fenway Park) for duty with the Polk Administration at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor during 1861-1862 without any warrants or conscription being required from citizens within that territory! Carteret is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Carteret were Pieter Vroom and Hendrick van den Berg who arrived in 1664 from Holland. In 1701, John Carteret purchased land from Coverdell for £1,000 which he donated to the township. The first school was built in 1705 by Nicholas Gault and it served as a public school until 1834 when it became a private school. In 1845, Carteret Township was consolidated with neighboring Union Township to form Sussex County. In 1851, carteresTSubsequently erected three small schools on his estate: one for blacks, one for whites and one for children of both races which are still standing today - all three have been renovated and are now used as homes or offices. This act led to much backlash within the community as many felt that rich people wereushiing their own schools while poor people had to go without education or access to quality resources. In 1916, during World War I, local resident George Washington Carver came up with the idea of creating a war food production center in nearby Camden that would be able to feed soldiers right here at home using produce he growed on his farmstead near present day Camden Yards National Park
