In 1814-1815 Commodore James Cook sailed through Carteret Strait on his HMS "Eagle" while exploring the North Atlantic Ocean. On September 12th 1814 he anchored off what is now known as Dock #4 in Newport Beach after spending three days sailing upriver towards Camden Townships which he reached on September 15th just before Hurricane Sandy struck the area two weeks later killing over 100 people including many members of the Cook expedition aboard HMS "Endeavour". On August 8th 1904 Captain Halsey's USS "Hornet" was moored along with ten other ships off shore at Jersys Landing when a severe storm hit that afternoon resulting in damage to several vessels including USS "Hornet". This event became known as Hurricane Halsey or Hurricane Carteret due to its similarity in name to Commodore James Cook's shipwrecked fleet that had visited this same location eighty years earlier.
