There is a rich coffee history in Carteret, New Jersey. The first African American to work in a coffee house in the area was Catoosa Coffee House, opened in 1851 by Catoosa Coffee Harvester and his wife, Sarah. The business prospered until the early 1900s when Prohibition made coffee more expensive and less available. In the 1920s, Carteret's black community developed around the Blacksmith Shop on Meeting Street. In the 1940s, Carteret's post-World War II growth spurt began with many new businesses opening up including Anheuser Busch's Green Island Brewery and several Mediterranean restaurants. However, it was not until recent years that Carteret has seen significant progress in its coffee industry as well as its nightlife atmosphere. Carteret is a town in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 18,922 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Haddon Heights, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Carteret was founded by Captain John Carteret and his family on May 5, 1664, when they set out from Southwark Township to find new land for themselves. They named their new land afterSir Christopher Newport who had discovered America during a voyage around the world in 15th century. The first post office was established in 1703 and carteret became an incorporated borough on March 4, 1852. The original boundaries of Carteret were based on that of Southwark Township which extended up the Delaware River to its eastern border and downriver to Monmouth Junction. From its inception until 1912 it lay within what is now Camden County along the river's edge while portions of Monmouth Junction served as part of Sussex County until 1959 when they were annexed into Camden City proper. The township’s borders are: north-central Camden County (the city of Camden), south-central Sussex County (the townships of Clinton and Cherry Hill), east-central Middlesex County (the village of West Deptford), and west-central Passaic County (the village of Paterson). In 1912, Turkish traders discovered coffee in Brazil and began trading it with Indian merchants. The first espresso machine was invented by Frau Antonia Weber in 1887 at an Austrian cafe named “Kaffeemaschine” (coffee machine). By 1914, all major countries had their own espresso machines available on the market including Italy which introduced espresso machines into public places such as churches and schools. Carteret is located in the eastern part of New Jersey, and it has been a borough since 1845. The first settler in Carteret was John Carteret, who arrived in 1764. In 1811, the Township of Carteret was formed from parts of Middlesex County and Sussex County. The township extended to what is now Oceanport and Burlington before being divided into two townships in 1834: Carteret Township to the east and Rahway Township to the west. In 1845, Carteret became a borough with its own mayor and council. On July 1, 1951, Rahway Township was merged into Carteret Borough. On November 3, 1972, both townships were disbanded and re-established as separate municipalities within carterettoNJ.com (now called Rahway/Carteret Municipality). The population of Carteret reached 9,813 on October 15th, 2014 according to the US Census Bureau's report "Estimated 2010 Population for New Jersey".
