When the first settlers arrived in Carteret Township, New Jersey in 1664, they were not sure what to make of the land. But they were soon able to explore and select a piece of land that would be their home. One of the early pioneers, John Carteret, chose to settle on a small island in the Monmouth River. He named his new town after himself, Carteret Island. The island was only about two acres wide and had no amenities other than a few trees and some brush for subsistence purposes. But over time, as more people moved into Carteret Township and started establishing homes there, they realized that they needed more space. So John Carteret donated several acres of his land – including what is now known asCarteret Island – to the township for use as a public square. This square became one of the most important stops on New Jersey road trips because it allowed residents from all around the area to come together and trade goods or offer prayers during religious services (such as baptism). In 1847, when Carteret Island was annexed by Jersey City, many of the inhabitants decided that they would rather live closer to family and friends than on an isolated island. So they began farming their original acreage onshore until finally moving back onto Carteret Island in 1942 when it became part of Garden State Parkway West traffic circle. Today, you can still find some traces of old-fashioned life: For example, there are still Andersen Farms produce stands located on both sides of Route 9 near highway exit 10A/12A (which used to be called "The Gables"). Carteret is a township in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 8,534. The township covers an area of 11 square miles (29 km²). It was named for General John Carteret who fought in the American Revolution and later became a U.S. Senator from Rhode Island. The community of Carteret began as a farmstead on Staten Island in 1784 and grew to include two churches and over 100 homes by 1824. In 1898, after Carteret's incorporation as a township, it had a population of 785 people. By 1990, however, the population had fallen to 614 people; at that point it merged with nearby Holmdel Township to form Holmdel-Carteret Borough.
