carteret is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,567 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Anglo-Dutch word "carrefour" meaning marketplace. The first Europeans to visit Carteret were fishermen who passed through on their way to and from Point Pleasant in 1664. In 1734, the Dutch explorer Hendrick Hudson explored the area and named it Carrefour after his father's shop in Rotterdam where he bought food for his exploratory trips. In 1814, General John Pemberton founded what would become Morristown on the eastern side of Carteret Lake. In 1821, General James Ketchum built a sawmill on Staten Island and started shipping lumber downriver to Morristown and Newark; this helped give Carteret its early economic foundation. In 1839, Captain Augustus Wright established a store in what is now called Wrightstown which became known as the "Wrighttown Marketplace." After Captain Wright's death in 1861, his widow continued running the store until her death in 1925. The store remained open until 1973 when it was closed due to bankruptcy. The first post office opened at Carteret in 1824; it was renamed Westville afterward by act of Congress in 1876 because of its location on Westville Road (now Route 35). The last post office closed at Carteret on January 15th, 1975.
