In 1796, Dutch immigrants started a coffee plantation on the now-demolished Cape May Light estate in Carteret Township. Coffee beans were brought to New Jersey by sea from Brazil in 1670. The first mill built in what is now Rahway was operational by 1712. By 1800, there were five coffee mills operating in Middlesex County; these mills processed an estimated 1,500 sacks of ground coffee each day. By 1825, there were twenty-four coffee mills operating in Middlesex County alone! The early days of the modern coffee industry were challenging for both farmers and brewers. One challenge was that it took a long time for coffees to reach market demand due to their high price tags and large production costs. Farmers had to grow many thousands of pounds of premium quality beans while brewers had to create efficient processes and build expensive equipment to produce high quality cups of Joe. However, through hard work and experimentation, both groups succeeded in developing new brewing methods and products that continue to this day! In 1954, Harry Jelinek opened the first café in Newark (now part of Newark Liberty International Airport). Jelinek’s Cafeteria began serving fresh roasted ground coffee as well as iced tea and other refreshments immediately following his installation as the first owner/operator at Newark’s new Municipal Department Headquarters complex on Market Street (then known as First National Bank). In 1718, Carteret became an Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court and served until his death in 1753. He is also buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Clifton Township, New Jersey.
